When flight + hotel is less than flight

I've been looking around for flights from LAX to PPT for a June honeymoon in Bora Bora. The prices I'm finding are around $1400 USD round-trip per person. On some pages, I see flight and hotel deals for around the same price. If that is true, can I just get the package deal and not use the hotel? We already have our housing paid for.

I've heard of people doing that. I don't see why on earth you couldn't... I would just make sure that transfers aren't included or that you cancel the transfers (in the interest of politeness-- wouldn't want the transfer guy spending twenty minutes looking for me... seems rude).

Same applies for package rates everywhere- the hotel rate is probably being subsidized by the air carrier, hence the same price.
