Some one mentioned that the ocean current in the coral gardens often create problems for snorkelers back of the Sofitel Motu. Can anyone explain this to me? (refer to "best islands for snorkeling" in Food, Activities and Excursion forum topic)

As holte said, there's no current at the Sofitel Motu. I want to add that it's a wonderful spot to snorkel if you aren't much of a swimmer (of course, it's also great if you are). You can stand in the blank spots (there are many) and just stick your face in the water. Hubby had so much trouble with his mask leaking last trip (because of his mustache) that he did that a lot at the Sofitel Motu. It's not very deep so standing & looking into the water is very comfortable.

I'm wondering if the currents are in the deep coral garden areas closer to the backside of the motu. The coral gardens between the neighbor motu and the Sofitel motu had an apparent current, but nothing to speak of on the backside of the motu that I can remember in the deeper areas (10 to 12 feet). Maybe any currents depend on the tides and size of the breakers outside the coral fringes of BB on any given day. I only say this because normally the lagoon on Mo'orea by the Sheraton is fairly current free, but it was like a river going west to east when big breakers were pounding the north fringes of that island last time we were there.
