Maururu Barbi!

While I wore my pearls in the ocean on Moorea all the time -- I never wear them here on Kaua'i in a swimming pool or when showering (same for Moorea) - I keep them away from perfumes and hairs spray also -- I actually rub them in Monoi oil with a flannel cloth -- is that okay to do?

Maururu and Mahalo!
Janet

Janet,

The people at Pai Moana Pearls on Moorea told me that Monoi was fine, because it does not have any alcohol in it -- pearls do not like alcohol!

Tahitian cultured pearls contain a protein substance that binds with the carbonate crystals in the nacre, and this protein contains just over 2% water, so it's important to keep the nacre hydrated and devoid of impurities (especially acids from your skin). In humid climates like Tahiti and Hawai'i, hydration isn't a problem but other drier climates should cause concern. A light coating of olive olive (or monoi as mentioned by other posters) wiped off with a soft cloth keeps your pearls brilliant and reduces dehydration of the protein.

beautiful pictures!

Just wondering, which resort was it with the OWB??

I thought I only see those 'blue' in pictures of Bora Bora. Does Moorea have that too?

I think it's the Sofitel, at least that's what it looks like. There is a great view point along the main road to pull off for that picture.

Yes, the water does look like that in many locations around Moorea too. It is NOT just Bora Bora. There is just MORE of it on Bora Bora.
