My wife and I are staying at the Le Moana Bora Bora. We don't live near the ocean, so we don't own snorkel gear. Le Moana Bora Bora is supposed to have equipment that we can borrow, but i've heard that they often run out of equipment to lend out. I'm also concerned about the equipment (and does the snorkel equipment include fins?)... Anyways, if anyone has any information on Le Moana's lend out equipment, I would really appreciate the feedback. Todd

I don't know anything about their lending of equipment, but do you really want to use a snorkel that others have used? Also, you want a mask that fits you otherwise your experience will not be that good. A snorkel and mask is not that expensive and I imagine in a city the size of Tucson you do have a dive shop that carries the equipment. And if you become a n FP addict, you will be happy that you have your own equipment. I don't think fins are any big deal so those are OK to borrow.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
We are leaning towards the purchase of the masks here. Still trying to decide on fins based on what you recommended. Although cost is still an issue, i was worried more about baggage weight. With all the extras that everyone recommends bringing (snacks, clothes, sunscreen, bugspray, etc...) I'm just trying to figure where to cut back.

On our first trip, we brought our own mask and snorkel and borrowed fins. Fins are fairly generic (they do need to fit, but unless your feet are a really weird size, the resorts should be able to fit you) so we didn't bring them. On our second trip, snorkelling was the focus of the trip (funny enough, we didn't realize that until we were there!) so we took complete sets. We just bought Body Glove sets from our local Costco (inexpensive but quite sufficient).

I personally would not use what the hotel has. You can pick some up at home very easily and fairly inexpensive. They sell mask an snorkel sets at most sporting goods stores for about $20-25. This is where we bought ours. Our is made by US Divers. They have worked very well for us on 4 trips to FP(and lots of snorkeling). Unless you will be doing a lot of snorkeling in the future, it isn't necessary to buy an expensive set. Just make sure the mask you buy fits your face properly and does not leak. They don't take up much room in your luggage. The snorkle takes very little, and I always pack some clothes or soemthing in the mask to make better use of the room it occupies. Personally I don't think it's necessary to bring fins. We don't use them and have no trouble snorkeling without them. They just take up way too much room in our luggage.

I agree that fins aren't necessary.
But if you do decide to buy your own, stuff the footwells full of clothing or other items, and try to pack them in such a way that they do not get bowed at the bottom of the bag (certain kinds can permanently warp). Also, know that most fins weigh more than you would think they do.

Bring your snorkel and mask- it makes a big difference. We didn't bring fins- they have plenty at the resorts usually. Also don't forget to bring some reef shoes too!

Reef shoes are really just any type of enclosed shoe with a rubber sole designed to be worn in the water while swimming/snorkeling. You might be able to find them at a local dive or surf shop, some sporting goods stores and during the summer time, even places like Target and Walmart.

You can also order reef shoes online-- we've done so thru Amazon and thru some of the major online shoe sites. Target's are OK, but much thinner soled (we started out with a $5 pair from there and upgraded about two years ago to a $35 pair... got our $5 worth!). Places like REI also carry them if you want really, really high end.
We've stayed twice at Le Moan, but always brought our own snorkel stuff. Our first trip to Tahiti was also our first snorkel experience, so we used the hotels. Ick. It was functional, but that was about all you could say for it.
Le Moana offers a paid transfer to a private motu (about 4000-4500 cfp/person) that I highly recommend. Outstanding snorkeling there!
