Thought I would update everyone because you all were so helpful!

We ponied up and switched to a Diamond OWB at Thalasso. Aside from the whole cockroach issue, the small and older rooms at Le Meridien were not enticing to me.

I expect that we'll spend a lot of time in our bungalow and on the deck, and the Thalasso OWB look a lot more conducive to that than Le Meridien OWB. Especially b/c I really don't like cramped spaces and we prefer newer, modern decor.

I really appreciate the duct tape trick Tambir, and for all the helpful info Sasha and TravCarib.

I'm still crossing my fingers for a roach-free stay...I've had good luck thus far in the tropics, maybe it will continue! Regardless I'll bring duct tape...

We have never had a problem on land, boats are a whole other story.... but using duct tape on land, more tape on some islands than others, but never a problem. He has more than spidey sense, it is a roach-sense for him, and one creepy feeling and out comes the tape. I have sat there while my husband duct tapes the whole door and tapes down the duct tape door sweep that he made earlier quite a sight, but he sleeps well, and we have enjoyed every trip. Crazy for most people, but it works for him.

You will like Thalasso and the Diamond Bungalows there are definitely in the best spots. If you like a bigger more modern feel you will absolutely prefer Thalasso to Le Meridien. I think you will be fine- don't worry about the bug thing too much. Just make sure you close any snacks you bring in. Have a great trip! (Make sure you check out the spa too- contact the hotel because a lot of time slots were taken already so we booked our spa days before we got there....)

We stayed at Le Meredien Bora Bora in 9/02 for our honeymoon. We are going back there in August. It was beautiful - no bugs, although the housekeeping will walk in on you at any time, and they don't seem embarrassed. Be prepared for the afternoon turndown service!
We didn't feel that our overwater bungalow was worth the price again. But, you have to stay in them once for the experience. All you see from the glass floor was sand (no coral). And, the water's pretty deep off the bungalow. So, this time we are staying in a beach/lagoon bungalow. It may be less private, but we'll walk out to a sandy beach.
Le Meredien has a wonderful lagoon where you can swim with the turtles. I'm looking forward to going there again! I hope this helps.

LOL, finley about the 'walking in any time'. We experienced that on our first trip at the Intercontinental Moorea. By the time hubby went out to see what the guy who came through the door wanted (the guy did discreetly exit and pull the door shut), hubby said he'd never seen a man with such a big smile on his face (and we're no spring chickens, I should add!).

If you are going to Thelasso you should book the saphire level and sign up for Embassador status. For $150 or 24,000 priorityclub points you get a one year membership. You receive a guaranteed upgrade to the next level - Diamond! You also get a coupon that gives you a weekend night free when you pay for a weekend night (fri - sat or sun). This coupon expires 6 months after you get it so don't join Embassador until you are less than 6 months from your stay at Thelasso. By joining Intercontinental Embassador you will pay a lower rate for Diamond level and you will get one night free - saving you hundreds of thousands XPF!!!

we had our Bora-Bora vacation just last March, and we actually
stayed at the Le Meridien.. and me and my husband, were really, really satisfied. We had an OWB and a great view of Mt.Otemanu.. the sunset view from LeMeridien, is awesome! I think, this hotel, has the best view of the mountain.
We never had any "roaches" problem, but some ants though beside the sink, which was dealt with immediately. We loved the buffet in this hotel, plus the free internet access!! :-) The boat service they provide to the main island was superb!! Sort of great accessibility!! :-)
If you want, I have a few photos from the hotel..not the hotel itself though, but the surroundings...you can check some of my photos..just bear with it though, because it's all mixed up! :-)

If you get freaked out by a roach - then don't come to Australia. In my 5 visits to FP, I can honestly say that I am VERY surprised to even see a "Bugs" thread here. If you see an insect - so what! If you get a Roach in your room, then jump in the water with a Black Tip / Lemon / White Tip Reef Shark. Then you can bring it all into perspective. It's a BUG - either squash it - or spray it - either way, it is GONE. Once the drama of an insect is over, take a deep breath and walk outside and check out where you are. Welcome to paradise (including the odd insect or two). There are WAY worse places in the world to be!!!!
The first time I went to FP, I met a girl from Brazil. She told me that she would NEVER go to Australia because of the sharks, spiders, snakes and crocodiles. Eventually she told me that she couldn't step into the creek in her backyard, because there are pirhana in there. HELLO!!
Tahiti and her islands are the best and safest places in the world.
You drive on a freeway in California - you get shot. You walk in Washington at night - you get shot. You catch a plane ANYWHERE in the US and you risk death. You go to FP and you see a roach. These are the perseptions that we all see.
Sit on your deck in FP and enjoy the view. It doesn't get any better than this.
Please keep it all in perspective - we all take a vacation to get away from it all - and FP is definitely "away from it all". Forget the bugs and consentrate on "leaving it all behind".

THANK YOU Gary & Cath!!! I couldn't have said it better myself. I just shake my head is disbelief every time someone has a complete meltdown about seeing a bug in their room. In the big scheme of things IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!! It just a stupid bug. It's not like it's some deadly poisonous spider or something. Get over it!

You need look no further than the make up of roof of the bungalows to understand why they may have a few bugs in the bungalows. It's a perfect haven for them to hid in. Add that to the tropical climate and you have bugs. It's just not a big deal.
