We just came back from Bora Bora and from what we saw, you'll be very glad that you went with the Thalasso. We didn't stay at either Le Meridien or the Thalasso but one thing that we noticed about Le Meridien (from our view on the lagoon) was how open the decks of the OWBs were... there seemed to be very little privacy. The decks of the OWB at the Thalasso on the other hand were very private and incredibly large.

But you didnt stay at the hotel!! Its just an observation from a speeding boat I assume. The Le Meridien hotel was built before the mega resorts such as the Thalasso, St Regis and Four Seasons. The Le Meridien Bora Bora is a great hotel and would be a fantastic place to stay. I have

We've stayed at both and yes, Thalasso rooms are VERY large, but Le Meridien have those glass panels on the floor, a much better beach and the service is WAY better at Le Meridien, however Thalasso service is excellent, but Le Meridien is exceptional. We're going back to Le Meridien next year for our tenth anniversary (we got married at Le Meridien) but we are also going to stay at Soffitel Motu, then on the Rangi.

I haven't posted since Gary/Cath and Patti's response. This is the snarkiest I've been treated in any online community and I feel like these two responses were simultaneously unhelpful and verging on rude. I GENUINELY appreciate the help of all of the other posters, thank you!
I had a legitimate travel question about a hotel and several posters were kind enough to give me real responses. I don't know why either of you would feel the need to virtually chastise me for being so bold to even ask about bugs in Tahiti.
I'm a world traveler and have been to Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa etc and know all about bugs. It is just my preference that I stay at a hotel that is least likely to have a bug problem for my honeymoon.
Just needed to get this off my chest, it really had "bugged" me.

Not sure if I missed anything. Are you responding to Gary and Caths and My response?

Oh, my, you must go to some pretty tame online communities! I didn't see anything snarky in their replies, just some humour. I think you're being way too sensitive.

You have to go back and read the comments about the bugs. I want my daughter's in-laws to come with us to FP, but the mother-in-law has a phobia about water and has never been swimming because of an incident as a child. I tried to explain that you have to force yourself down because the water is so buoyant. My daughter explained about phobias. I have a rodent phobia, but not as bad as a friend who even has a melt down at a picture of a rodent. Someone else's phobia seems so easily conquered. Although I have to say, I didn't see the comments as any big deal. It's the reality of life that there are insects and there are rodents. So those of us with issues have to live in a concrete bubble or learn to deal with it. And keep of dreaming of ways to keep those suckers out!

I didn't think anyone was being 'snarky'. Bugs are a fact of life in the tropics. You just have to deal with them or don't go.

I am truly sorry if you took my comments about bugs to be rude or being snarky. They weren't intended that way. They were not about you specifically, but about bug haters in general. I'm not fond of them either. I prefer not to see them in my room. But I also will not let them ruin my stay.
Honestly...the bugs are not a big deal. It's not like your rooms will be literally crawling in roaches. You might see one. You might see two. It's the tropics. There are bugs there. They may find a way into your room. If that is enough to ruin a vacation, then you should re-think a visit to the tropics.
As for my comment about people having complete meltdowns. I have read a review where there was a roach found in the room at 4am....I think it was the Pearl Resort in Bora Bora, if I remember right. They were upset that the multiple calls to the front desk to come kill it did not result in someone coming to their room at 4am to kill it. It's a stupid bug.... step on it.... swat it with a paper, ignore it. I hardly think it's worthy of a call for help to the front desk at 4am. They come back and give the hotel a horrible online review of the hotel and of their trip...because of the bug incident....with no regard to all the other things about the hotel or the island. How can you let a bug completely ruin your vacation? I'm sorry, but that is beyond ridiculous in my book.
I have seen exactly 2 roaches in my rooms on 5 trips to FP. And I don't stay at 4 and 5 star resorts where they typically spray for bugs. I honestly don't think any resort can 100% guarantee you that there will be no bugs on your room. Yes, they are far less likely at the nicer resorts that spray continually, but there is no guarantee.

The whole "bugs" topic is an odd one. For people who don't mind them, or can deal with them easily, it is a silly topic, but for those of us who can't deal with them, it is an essential one. For my husband (who has the real phobia) and I when we travel, we have learned that boats are a no go - they are much more likely to have roaches and not the big guys that cross your path on most walks back to any bungalow anywhere, but the little guys that hide in your luggage and come home with you (okay they probably don't but you are always worried that they will). The larger resorts spray, which reduces the chances of finding them in your room, and that works for us. As wonderful as a place like Ramiti sounds, we know we can never go there, just because the potential for bugs is greater due to the style of bungalow, no windows, and no doors. When travelling to Bora Bora, we asked if people had had problems with bugs. In most cases the response was no. So we decided on our hotel based on the info we could get. We also travelled with duct tape and created our own level of comfort in our room. Crazy to some, but it works for us.
In many ways we are the strangest couple to go to FP because I don't swim in oceans, and he hates bugs. But he has no problem being underwater with whatever comes along, and I love to sit on the dive boats. You can't freak out over a bug in your room, true, but it changes your level of comfort on your trip. The important part to remember is just becuase 'Fred' has a bug in his room, doesn't mean you will. If you travel often (like my husband) you figure out how to find your comfort level in a country with bugs as part of the local scene. Part of that comfort includes (for us) walking back to our room with a flashlight, to scare the critters away as we go, shining the light around the door before opening it, and sealing yourself in with duct tape once you get in your room. :-) Oh, yeah and keep towels over all drains, and plug the sink ;-P Okay it is crazy, but it works for us and we love FP, so we'll keep doing it so we can enjoy such a beautiful place. But we also know when going to travel forums, not everyone, in fact most people don't share our view, so we have to take much of the advice we receive with a grain of salt, becuase only we know how much of a problem bugs are for us.
