Hi there! My future wife and I will be arriving in Bora Bora this August. It has been my dream spot for my honeymoon ever since I saw a lonely planet episode on Bora Bora when I was about 14. Nearly 10 years later it is coming true!
I would like to know of some of your recommendations on what you MUST do/see in Bora Bora. We are doing 10 daysm, and I feel this is adequate time to relax and still do some activities!
What are the rough costs for bike rentals as the websites I have found dont have prices.
and what type of currency will I require? Im canadian, but will american dollars do any good or do you need XPF?
These are a few questions that I have, and I am sure I will post more as I think about them!
Final question might not be able to be answered by anyone here, but I am a kite surfer and am wondering what the trade winds are like and what sizes of kites are typically seen around the island? I have 8m, 10m, 12m, 16m, and 21m kites. All C-kites What knot speed is usually seen in Bora bora? Is it consistant?
Thanks everyone!
Rich

Wow, 10 days in Bora Bora? You'll have tons of time to relax and still do activities (I found 5 days there plenty, but everyone's different). Have you finalized your plans or are you still flexible enough to add another island and split your time between 2 (I'd do that, personally)?
You'll definitely need XPFs. Take Canadian travellers' cheques and cash them at the airport bank when you arrive (one bank opens for all incoming flights). Use your credit card where possible & that cash elsewhere.
Bora Bora is all about the lagoon so don't miss out on a circle-island (by boat) trip and feeding the sharks & rays and snorkelling. Where are you staying?

OMG I didn't know Lonely Planet did an episode on Bora Bora. How did I miss that one. I love Ian from LP. We too have been looking forward to Bora Bora for 10 years. We are doing 5 nights Moorea and 7 nights Bora Bora. I think we plan to bring about $1500 in CDN travellers cheques and use are CC the rest of the time. Let's hope both the CDN and US dollars recover a bit before all our vacations.

1st, 10 days is great, I started with 4 days years ago and worked up to 30 days last July. I'd stay longer if I could afford it.
I like to rent and watch Mutiny on the Bounty before each trip, gets me in the mood.
The must see's seem to be a lagoon trip that includes snorkeling close to the reef where the ocean breaks over. The water will be the clearest with tons of fish. Next every body raves about the shark feeding and ray feeding trip. I agree with every one on this one.
Bikes, good question, you can rent a car and drive around the island 10 times for $80 so they can't be much. I would think some hotels have free ones?? I tend to be a walker. Nothing is that far! I just don't remember what I paid last time.
Money, I take and spend dollars. Seems like every counter person or waiter has a calculator. They will tell you what their rate is. This is a very "honest country". Visa, at least Chase Visa, will give you the true conversion rate but charge you a small fee to do so. But the rate will be so much better than anything you can get down there. American express and other visa banks used to give you the true rate and no fee, but I suspect that's history. Check with your cc provider. PS: Some places like Bloody Mary's the bill will show both dollars and XPF's.
I'm not into kite surfing, but there are a bunch who do it off the Hotel Bora Bora every evening. From the South you are watching them like shadows with this large beautiful sun going down behind them. It's great. Following is a link for the winds, and they like all trade winds are consistent most of the time. http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=3605

kite surfing is done from the Matira point if you are staying 10 days, you could take the maupiti express and do Maupiti for 1 day which is cool, rent a bike upon arrival and ride around the island, taking the ME back at 4 pm same day! Bike rental bora is 1500 cfp/day Sunset boulevard is place where you can take a relaxing sunset cruise with sushi etc, or a private motu bbq ($$$$) what resort did you pick?

BTW, being Canadian, if I were you I would buy euro's as they have a fixed rate of 119,33 cfp, whereas if you change your canadian $ to US$ you'll depend on the market fluctuations. Nowadays some try to get away with offering between 65 and 70 cfp for 1 USŁ

I think it's better just to change Canadian to XPF in Tahiti (with an ATM machine, if lucky enough to get one to work, or travellers' cheques).

Thanks for the great tips everyone!
So is the easiest thing to do too book these things in town rather than at the Club Med? I know 10 days was a lot..... I figured 7 days was enough too see it all, without feeling rushed, so i went with 10 to make sure we have a few days too just lay on the beach and relax with some cold beverages.......and maybe squeek a kite surf session out haha!
So picnics, circle tours, ray/shark feedings..... motu tours.....
Do most buisnesses take credit card? how much cash is reasonable?
as far as canadian to american goes, right now were on par with eachother :) weve been bouncing back ahead and behind the US dollar for a few months now
