I think most people like to spend at least 4 nights on an island so that you have 3 full days there. I think you have 14 nights? And possibly need to spend the first & last on Tahiti? So that leaves 12 and I'd suggest 3 islands with that. Our first trip was 7 nights Moorea and 5 Bora Bora. Our second was 1 Tahiti/5 Moorea/5 Huahine and 6 Fakarava. I like at least 5 nights on an island, but I would settle for 4 if time were tight. You've mentioned 3 islands (Moorea, Bora Bora and Maupiti) so you could go with 4 nights on each (or sneak a night from Maupiti, which will be very quiet and add it to one of the others--me, I'd add it to Moorea since it's a bigger, more-to-do island, in my opinion).

HDeare,
This might help make your decision. We are going to Maupiti in August and staying 5 nights. Due to the flight schedule (and my husband didn't want to take the Vomit Express), we ended up with 5 nights - we'll either love it or hate it!
We sent several faxes and e-mails to pensions(most places don't have e-mail). We only received 1 response - from Kuriri Village. They only had 3 nights available, otherwise they were booked for August already!
When I told them that we needed to find someplace else to stay for 2 nights and we weren't having any luck, they nicely volunteered another bungalow with 2 single beds for those 2 nights. (I assume that they thought we wouldn't want 2 separate beds, but hey, it's better than sleeping on the beach.)
Anyway, Maupiti doesn't have that many places to stay, so you might want to check into availability before you confirm your trip.

Howdy, HDeare

As a fellow "adopted Texan" please let me stir the pot just a little bit...

DO NOT MISS Moorea on your first trip to FP! Nobody here was able to convince me that you can visit a more beautiful island or find more things to do in one single island...

Bora Bora...certainly. Moorea...definitely!!!

I like Poehere's suggestion of a day trip to Maupiti. You could do 2 days Tahiti, 4 Moorea, 4 Huahine, 4 Bora Bora with a day trip to Maupiti - would make for a nice trip IMO.

Fly to moorea it is less $$$. You don't need to stay in Papeete the last night, you can come from Bora Bora into the States. JFK or LAX?
The OWB do offer the WOW factor you will not get in another other room category

I may be misunderstanding Evelyn's statement: "You don't need to stay in Papeete the last night, you can come from Bora Bora into the States. JFK or LAX?"
Not true. All international flights arrive and depart in Papeete, on the island of Tahiti. It is true that "You don't need to stay in Papeete the last night", but you must get to Tahiti to leave for an international destination. If coming from Bora Bora to Tahiti, you would fly in by Air Tahiti, the interisland carrier--a company wholly independent of the international airline, Air Tahiti Nui.
If leaving from Moorea bound for Tahiti, you may take a ferry or Air Tahiti or Air Moorea.

Even the celebrities who fly in on a private jet clear customs in Papeete.

Surely Evelyn is talking about 1943.... when the American army opened the BB airstrip??? LOL

Ditto Justine2 Kidmann and hubby went through that Tuesday night when flying out after having spent 4 days on Larry Ellison's Rising Sun, no escaping customs!
