Lots of discussion about the Olympus underwater camera here. Some folks have mentioned Canon cameras, is there a model that anyone loves? Canon has the best variety of underwater housings. It is for snorkeling, not diving.

Mine's a couple of years old & I won it in a contest. It's a Canon Powershot A530. The underwater housing for it is shared with another camera (maybe the A520), but it was really made for the other camera and mine is close enough in design for it to fit, but only the main buttons line up. That was a bit frustrating for us so if you're looking for a camera/housing combo, go for one where the camera is the main one the housing is designed for. I've owned Fujis, Minoltas, a Samsung & HP digital cameras and I do like the Canon a lot.

I have a powershot A95 which is about 4-5 years old now. The powershot A line is a good choice as an all-around land and water point-and-shoot camera. The waterproof housings can be used for diving or snorkeling and are rated to 130 feet. If you dive primarily, you will need to look into getting some type of strobe accessory - either as an attachment to the Canon housing, hand-held or some other type of housing with strobes such as an ikelite. If you dive any deeper than about 15 feet without a strobe, the colors will disappear the deeper you get until you are left with nothing but a blue fish photo.

Hi Old Wife and Islandboyatheart, Thank you for your suggestions. I have been using a 17 year-old Canon SLR. Wanted to go digital for this trip and lessen my weight load. I can still take beautiful photos with my old camera, my family hasn't been able to convince me to give it up(-:

If you are hesitant to give up the SLR look into the Canon G series. I have a G5 which is about 4 years old but the new G7 and G9 both have underwater housings. Much smaller and lighter than an SLR but with plenty of manual controls and the ability to add adaptor rings with wide angle and telephoto lenses as well as filters. The G is more expensive and will run you around $450-550. The best of the A series also have plenty of manual controls and other than low-light shooting and some depth of focus abilities, you don't lose much.

I gave up on non-digital SLR recently after falling in love with a Nikon D200. Ikelite has a (very expensive!) underwater housing for my "baby" but I am not brave enough to take it underwater.
As a 17 year-old user you probably want to continue using Canon for the rest of your life. Although the G series is very good I would also recommend you to look into the Canon EOS 5D... My hobby is video editing and I have edited some friends’ videos with embedded 5D pictures and they are pretty sharp. For my own purposes I still like the Nikon better but if I had to make the switch to the digital world with a Canon the 5D would be my first pick.
Ikelite also manufactures a reliable (and also very expensive!) underwater housing for the 5D.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think that I will be looking at the Canon Powershot series. Looking for something under $300. The Canon 5D, great camera, but $$$$! The Panasonic Lumix digitals look good too, but limited underwater cases.

I have a canon A520 with the uinderwater case & it is great. Buy the righcase & camera & the buttons do line up just like they should. It even has an underwater automatic colour adjustment setting.
I have only used it for snorkelling but its is rated for (I think) 30 meters. I have a friend who has one & does scuba with it & loves it.
Our walls are adourned with enlarged pictures, you will love it. The newer ones look pretty cool too. Very thin & larger screens, thats a +.

Yes, you have to have the main camera a case is made for (the camera I have has only one underwater case you can use...but it's really better for another camera, know what I mean?). I still managed to get lots of great photos, though.
