I'm surprised that it fit at all!

You really lucked out I think, as they are specifically designed for maybe 1 or 2 models which have all the buttons in exactlly the same locations. to my knowledge, they really don't fit anything else. Congratulations .. you reallt were lucky. I am also happy that you liked the pictures, ours truned out great too!

This one is actually designed for both models, but ours was the secondary one. I don't know how often Canon does that (design an underwater housing for 2 cameras). I knew this before I bought it, though (I'd read lots of online reviews). We were okay since we could use the important buttons, but I would have preferred using all of them.

Thank you all for your suggestions. As I have searched for a camera, I realized that the the digital world of cameras is overloaded with technical information, yikes! Isn't it irritating that the "state-of-the art" models are revamped/updated every year (even 6 months)?

Looks like we have decided on the Canon SD790IS with an underwater housing. I learned that in shopping for a digital camera, I do need a 3' LCD screen. I would hate to be fumbling for my reading glasses and miss a shot. In case we chicken out about actually using it underwater, we plan on bringing a disposable underwater camera. Yes, I will be bringing my old (uses 35mm film) Canon(-:

I have had the canon SD 700 with the underwater housing. I really like it and have gotten some pretty good underwater shots. I've only used it in the Caribbean a couple times so far, so I'm looking forward to using it in French Polynesia next year!

We have two cameras for underwater use: Canon 30D (with Ikelite housing) and a Fuji Finepix f31d. If you're snorkeling (and in some instances if you are diving), the latter will do the job wonderfully. A few links to a couple examples of ones taken by the f31d:

This is probably way too late, but here's my 2cents. I recently bought the housing for my canon A650 IS. (out of production I think) But I took some fantastic pictures in our pool. I was very impressed with the function -- everything was available except the view finder. The diffuser screen for the flash blocks it.
Well built and only ~$250 USD.
Judging by other comments, Canon makes a good line.
Only downsides - no external flash - no problem in clear water, like most of FP, in daylight. Get setup for us prosumer snorkelers.
