I have been searching the internet for all available information regarding the hotels on Moorea. After weighing the information, we booked the Pearl for 5 nights in September. Just a week after booking, there is a very negative review of the Pearl on Tripadvisor. It states that one of the two restaurants is permanently closed and the hotel is not in great shape- needs refurbishing. Will we be disappointed? At this point, we could change our minds and book elsewhere.
Thanks for any information from those who have stayed at the Pearl recently. (or other hotels that they LOVED on Moorea).

We will be travelling to Moorea in June and seriously considered the Pearl. Do not look at one negative review as a true reflection of a hotel. I did notice complaints about the food at the Pearl in the past. However, people love the Pearl location because of its' closeness to many other eating options off the resort (and walking distance).

Daydreamin, Where did you choose for a hotel on Moorea? I booked the Pearl because it was offered at a good rate through our cruisline (Regent) and we have a two week cruise on the PG after 8 nights precruise. I really want a nice hotel in Moorea since our nights in Tahiti will be filler to get over jetlag!
Thanks

We just booked at the Sofitel for three nights yesterday. It is the last segment of our June vacation in French Polynesia, after Fakarava. We chose it over the Pearl because it has a better beach and snorkeling.
We liked the Sheraton, but overall the Sofitel fit us better.
We will rent a car for a couple of days since it is not close to restaurants and shopping.
Almost booked a pension, but our favorites are full for our dates. The Pearl is an extremely popular stay with cruise ship travellers.

Reviews on Tripadvisor can get a bit wacky. You'll need to read all of the reviews, throw out the outliers, and then approach the data based on averages. The negative Tikehau reviews are a very interesting read. Lots of complaints about nothing to do.

Also, check the date stamp on the negative Moorea Pearl review. For example one of the restaurants (Le Matiehani) at the Pearl was closed back in January 2007. But has since then reopened. Did it close-up again in recent months?

I'm probably one of the few to say that the Moorea Pearl's resort food is not the greatest. [Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of resort food and room service.] It's overpriced for the convince, typical resort mark-up, but the food won't kill you. There are better alternatives off-site. You'll need to ask around for the what, where, and when(hours).

Overall: With so many off-site dinning options. Don't let the resort food become a deciding factor. And as of January 2007, the Moorea Pearl Resort is in very good condition. The location itself was recently (Please correct me, but I believe within the last 15 years?) demolished to make way for the Pearl Resort. And while the resort itself takes a daily beating from the high traffic. The facilities and grounds keeping crews are seen everywhere keeping the place in top shape.

There are a couple of other negatives. But depending on your own expectations. These issues, like the food, can be overlooked as well. I.e.) poor snorkeling, somewhat crammed location, lots of traffic surrounding the pool and bar.

Anyone with more recent information?

Also something to consider when reading those trip reports...the off season...Jan-March...is the time many of the hotels do their yearly maintenance work, as there are fewer guests then. So most refurbishing that was going on during that timeframe won't be going on during the high season months.

And by far the biggest complaint I see about hotels in FP on Trip Advisor is what they got for what they paid. FP is outrageously expensive. For the most part the quality the service and often the quality of the accomodations in French Polynesia DOES NOT match the price tag. So when you are reading trip reports, keep that in mind and then figure out if the writer is really has something valid to be complaining about.

I just read the Pearl review to which you must be referring. There is something wrong there with the review. You will note another review written for the same stay period (march 2008) with no mention of the extreme problems to which this poster refers.
The only consistency, over multiple reviews, is the complaint over costs in French Polynesia.

RE: my earlier remarks on the Sofitel. Here is a photo link to travellers photos on trip advisor:

I've learned which reviews to take seriously and which not to. The Bora Bora Pearl just got a horrid review and it made me laugh. I am staying at the Pearl and this review did not concern me in the slightest.

I know what you mean waterbabay. I have read reviews of hotels I have stayed at and wondered...did they stay at the same place I did???

A lot of it has more to do with the individual traveller than the actual property itself. Different strokes for different folks. Different people have different expectations, different demands, and different tolerance levels. One size does not fit all when it comes to opinions. You often have to read between the lines to get a sense of the person writing the review. To write a bad review of the property because the weather was bad during their stay is silly. To write a bad review because it was raining and the hotel did nothing to provide any other entertainment for the guests while it rained is beyond silly....yet I have read reviews like that.

ditto Patti in terms of service level etc. which is a very well know fact and quite unfortunate for some. I have seen guests complain (unjustified) about certain things in certain resorts just in order to obtain a reduction or free upgrade or other perks. Problem being that when they post it on Tripdvisor others try the same, if that does not turn out they post a "nasty" report LOL BTW in my opinion the Ia Ora has really improved in terms of food quality and after the renovations it has become a very beautiful resort with still today the most beautiful beach on Moorea and splendid views of Tahiti
