YanSolo, having read all that I agree with msoprano and Justine, the Thalasso has awesome rooms and (in my humble opinion) seems less formal than the St Regis. Any case the mountain view from St Regis is something I could not describe here as it would be wiped out... LOL. THe THalasso rooms are contemporary but absolutely wonderful. Not your standard "Polynesian type" but then again I imagine you are not gonna spend the whole day in the room.... sand beach over there is ok and the hotel is built in a large “cocoterai” thus plenty of sweeping palm trees and you also have the ocean side, very different with what we call the “coral soup”, little rough but great to see the sun rise as well and the motu Piti A’au is large enough to give you ample room to "stretch the leggs" and do some walk about, the lagoon is cristal clear that part. Presently the Thalasso is building a land base in the Anau district meaning that the boat shuttles would not take you over to the Moana Intercontinental but to the base, which is appr. 7 km from town, however there is a supermarket there as well, so either way you would be able to get some groceries prior to returning to the hotel.

The Thalasso and St Regis have a deal meaning that you would be able to dine at the Lagoon restaurant at the St Regis ( Jean-George’s Vongerichten), St Regis being on a different motu they’ll will pick you up and take you back. There are other restaurants on the main island for which the hotel can arrange transportation…. Lot of changes though lately, but one that is also extremely good is the Restaurant Matira (it will close end of the year though). People rave about Villa Mahana but it is extremely expensive and again in my humble opinion not all that special at all. Enfin people have different tastes fortunately.

I think you should check out the Hotel Bora Bora too though, the oldest hotel and many people's favorite! Main island, so very practical in terms of visiting village, restaurants and so on. Very polynesian style hotel with a lot of polynesian staff (the new hotels have a lot of young French staff)

For your second part I would look into the Kia Ora Rangi and book both (I think Patti mentioned them as well), the Kia ORa Village and the Kia Ora Sauvage which is on the other side of the lagoon (2nd largest lagoon in the world so quite far away) which will give you the Robinsoe Crusoe feeling with deserted beaches but with a good service level. An excursion (if going to Rangi) not to be missed would be the Blue Lagoon and if you like marine world, the Tiputa pass (the current takes you in and you don’t even have to move, just watch the fish and shark etc spectacle pass by…)

Manihi is ok, but for me, an absolute “Tuamotu lover” it somehow does not seem to give you that special feeling, something I can not explain but again nothing wrong with the Pearl over there.

Service: enjoy the surroundings rather than counting the time it takes someone to serve you…. time has a very different perspective here…. If you can let that go a little you’ll be fine!!

Lastely I don’t know for which period you are planning this trip??? Four Seasons BB is going to be an absolute beauty with very high service level (probably the highest in FP) however not until the end of this year…

Well I had a nice cold Hinano while writing all that LMAO hope it helps you a little

I forgot to mention, if you want to play "Moon Man" take a walk out to the ocean side of any island. It literally looks like the surface of the moon. It's crazy to see the difference from the lagoon to the ocean.
