With a stay planned this summer at Hotel Bora Bora, should we change our reservations to elsewhere? I do not know what to expect there with the business closing for 2 years on October 1 and employees searching for new employment.

Wow, I'd jump at the chance to stay there while it's still open!

Are they closing permanently or just for a remodel?

I looked over at trip advisor and the official announcement seems to talk mostly about a 2 year closing for renovations, not a permanent closing. Guess they want to be able to better compete with the glitz over at St Regis, Four Seasons and Thalasso. There is always something to be said for real class without the embellishments. I would not cancel the reservations. You still have the opportunity to experience the charm of the resort that is now Hotel Bora Bora. That is why many chose this resort over the flashy newer ones. Plus it has the beautiful beach and good snorkeling.
Hope the renovations are considerate of the environment. Can't replace the thousand year old coral.

I would not change your plans either. You will be among the last to experience the class and charm of the Hotel Bora Bora as it is/was. That would be priceless to me. I really fear that when it does re-open, it will just be another pretty face.

They where talking about in last October. They where going to do it in stages or close the entire hotel for a while. I guess they went with plan B. The plan is to make larger Beach Bungalows and move the restaurant and lobby to the other side of the road and have more bungalows on the point. It does need some updating and with the new hotels coming online it hard for them to compete. Their occupancy was about 30% this last year.
I would go and not worry about the staff. It will be a great experience

Where did you read about the closing of Hotel Bora Bora--I have checked their site and nothing is listed there. We made reservations last month for Oct/Nov. 2008 and they accepted our reservations. If they were closing for renovations--wouldn't our reservations have been declined?
I will call my travel agent in the morning--but it will be a worrisome night!!

Here's the official announcement sent to agents yesterday...

Ia Orana from Hotel Bora Bora,

It is with much emotion that we announce today the closure of Hotel Bora Bora for complete renovation from October 1st 2008 for a period of 2 years.

The arrival of new products with sophisticated facilities in French Polynesia these past few years has made the reinvention of Hotel Bora Bora a necessity.

Several factors were taken into consideration by Amanresorts and this decision is a result of their absolute commitment to Hotel Bora Bora and its staff, its partners and clients as well as the destination of French Polynesia.

You may be certain that the reopening of the hotel will confirm its unique place in French Polynesia by adding a new dimension to it characteristic of Aman’s image and standing while paying tribute to Hotel Bora Bora’s history and mana.

Meanwhile, our priority is to ensure our guests confirmed for after October 1st 2008 are relocated in the best possible conditions. We are currently in talks with other hotels in Bora Bora to facilitate the relocations and will advise the results as soon as possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions and specific needs as we wish to be of as much assistance as possible to you during this time.

We would like to finish by expressing our utmost thanks for your support as always.

Sincerely,

All the team at Hotel Bora Bora>>

Mauru uru roa for the many many years of excellence, we will miss you all. Looking forward to be there for the re-opening already

I can't believe it--I can't believe they would have accepted our reservations knowing they were closing for renovations. This was to celebrate our 30th anniversary--we were there for our 20th. I am so disappointed--I really don't want to stay at another hotel. I guess I will have to look elsewhere.

It's been in the works for over a year. Originally it was speculated it'd be closer to the end of the year, I think it was a very recent decision to close Oct 1. I guess they didn't get all the permits and the green light go ahead until just recently.

Wait and see what they offer you before you cancel. It might be an offer you can't refuse.
