Hi, I got quotes for my honeymoon in Nov...
for similar price, I get a Garden view room for Moorea Pearl (no meal) or a Ocean view room at Le Maitai Bora Bora (w/ breakfast).
I know Moorea Pearl is a 4 star compare to le Maitai, but it's not bora bora. and I just saw the post about Moorea's Lagoonarium closing.... (so where would people go for the entertainments?) any suggestions?

Concerning the Moorea Pearl. Is this for a "room" or "bungalow"?
If this is a room, then I'd say pass and go for the Le Maitai. Disclaimer: Haven't been to the Le Maitai so my opinion might be a bit skewed.
When it comes to the Moorea Pearl, there ain't much in the way of views here. The garden view room balcony's face towards the bundalows (see website map). So from the first floor, you're either looking at the bundalows. Or on the second floor, the ocean can be seen in the far distance.
Views aside. The Moorea Pearl is a very nice resort. Nice facilities, nice staff, and excellent bundalows. It does get bit crowded at times and the food, you'll either love or hate it.
Le Maitai sounds like a better option as you get the benefit of an ocean view and breakfast.

We had a garden view room at Le Maitai. It was very nice. Had AC but most of the time we were in it we had the big sliding glass doors open with the breeze blowing through. Private patio, tile floors, very cool bathroom with lots of nice details. It's a short hike up the hill. I think the ocean view rooms are in the newer section that were under construction when we were there in 1999, so might be a bit more of a hike. But the walk to the beach across the road takes about 2 minutes...and it's Bora Bora!! You have to see it at least once in your life. Lots of restaurants close by and within walking distance.
We haven't been to the Moorea Pearl, but stayed at the old Bali Hai which is on the site of the newer Moorea Pearl. We stopped in and went through it in 2004. It's in a nice location right in the village of Maharepa where you can walk to restaurants and shops. They crammed alot of bungalows onto the site, but not any more congested than Maitai on Bora Bora. The grounds are lovely and you're on the ocean side of the road. The beach is bigger than Maitai. There's tons to do besides the Lagoonarium. We've been there twice and were plenty busy without doing the Lagoonarium. There's 4 x 4 tours, circle island tours, motu picnic excursions, rental cars to tour the island on your own, snorkeling, shopping (gag) at Maharepa or Le Petit Village - tons to do.
Personally, we like Moorea better because it's more laid back than Bora Bora, but they are both beautiful in their own way and it might be more fun to tell people you went to Bora Bora for your honeymoon - it sounds so exotic - and is!

Yes, it is quite a hike up the hill to the Ocean View rooms at Le Maitai. But the view of the lagoon is spectacular from there. You do get some road noise when you have the sliding glass door open. It's a nice relatively small property. Rooms were clean and comfortable.
I have not personally stayed at the Moorea Pearl, but I have heard nice things about it.
Both hotels are close to restaurants and grocery stores. It really depends on which island you'd prefer to visit. Personally, I prefer Moorea. I think there is more to do, more to see, the island itself is much prettier, prices will be a bit lower, the people are MUCH friendlier, and you will not have to pay the expensive air fare to Bora Bora. But.... that lagoon of Bora Bora truly is truly one of the most beautiful things you will ever see.

Hi all, Thanks so much for the suggestions. my quote for the Moorea Pearl is 6 nights in a garden view room (w/ daily breakfast, found a better deal) vs 5 nights at le maitai in ocean view (also w/ daily breakfast).
the Pearl deal is like $300 cheaper than le Maitai.... I'm thinking I might go for the Pearl and ask if I can upgrade to a bungalow for a day or two. (don't know if I can do that... yet)
any suggestion on whether it's worth the money of upgrading to a garden pool or beach bungalow? or should I just bite the bullet for the overwater?

I think the Pearl on Moorea would be a great choice. You might want to consider upgrading to an OWB for at least a night or 2 of your stay. It really is a very cool experience. If it's not in your budget to do it for the whole time, then a night or 2 will give you a taste without breaking the bank. That is what we did at Le Maitai. We stayed 5 nights in an ocean view room and 2 nights in an over water. It's so outrageously expensive over there, you have to do what is best within your budget. Don't bankrupt yourself on the room or you won't have anything left for food and excursions.

Thanks Patti, I think I've decided on the Pearl and have confirmed that I can upgrade for 2 nights for an OWB for ~$400 more. so excited!!!
now the question is, should I request for a specific bungalow? suggestions?

It's usually best not to request a specific number bungalow....but rather what you are looking for in a bungalow. Most private, best view, most quiet, etc. That way if a specific number you want isn't available, the hotel has an idea of what it is you are looking for.
I have never stayed at the Moorea Pearl, but several in here have. They could probably offer some specific suggestions to you.

It's a hard decision. They are both beautiful in their own respects. Personally I don't think you can make a bad choice when choosing between the 2.
