Yves is absolutely right about the eBay phones-- you have to be very careful that they are BOTH GSM 900 AND unlocked! Also, they are not as cheap as they were a few years back...
Yves, if your Tahitian cell phone rentals are already equipped with a Vini service (and local number), then incoming calls should be free? This is a BIG advantage of using a Vini SIM card with a local 689 FP number rather than a USA cell phone with roaming charges, and Yves' phones will be definitely compatible with the GMS 900 system in FP!

Thanks Y. My husband was actually looking to change to a new blackberry anyway, so this isn't the issue. Also, with our discount, the new phone works out to be the same price as a rental. And with either phone, you still have to buy the Vini card. For most of our calls, I have already configured the home computer and laptop with Skype, so we should be set to go if we want a set time to call home.
I suppose part of it is the comfort of holding that phone waiting for it to ring. :-)

I nearly bought a blackberry in the US but as we can only use those phones here for calls and none of the other functions we'll have to wait until the big cable is put in place linking FP with Hawaii 2010... I guess by that time there is plenty of other stuff on the market. Skype works good here.

Skype was great, but for everyone's information, it was very expensive at the Thalasso in the rooms for internet time, we would have been better having my husband get the Blackberry (which he did not make time to do before leaving.) It was about $20 an hour at the Thalasso, the Nui was better at $30 a day, and Tahaa was not really an option from the room, but $30 for the entire stay for access from their computers. There was always a computer open, in fact, I think there was only twice we saw other people there. They also had Skype downloaded on their computers, just have to bring your own earphone/mic set!
