Personally I would go upstairs to the cafe, buy something and lay out on a booth and take a nap. I've done that several times.

The problem with "going upstairs" to lie down on those soft comfty couches is that they are located inside the secured DEPARTURE area, and aren't available to people who are exiting immigration/baggage claim into the public area as they arrive in Papeete. But the upstairs cafe, over the snack bar, does have some soft booths too, though they are not open all night, as the snack bar is. And the upstairs departure couches are great for when you are leaving Tahiti after you have checked in and passed security!

Problem with those nice soft couches upstairs in the departure area is they are so comfortable...so that if you lay down, you just might fall asleep! I'm usually so tired by the time I get to that point, I really have started to doze off before. If I did happen to fall asleep, Paul is always up reading, drinking a beer, and awake, so I "think" he'd wake me for our flight. :-)

Patti, do you really think that he'd leave you in Tahiti and go home? If so, I guess you'd have to enjoy Tahiti some more while he's back in the USA. Oh well.

Ahhh....sometimes I wonder. LOL! Well, he just might strand me somewhere else, but he'd be too dang jealous to leave me in Tahiti!

You are really stuck between a rock and a hard place--sleeping on the airport is pretty hard, but you should check your big luggage and only take carryon up to the Airport hotel--take a taxi and it's about $15USD. We stayed at the hotel once and decided it wasn't worth it. As holte mentioned, by time we got to Faa we were pretty excited and couldn't go to sleep at the hotel. I like to wander around airport for a while, look at the stores that are open when the big planes come in, read more of my book, get a little walking exercise around the airport, and then use my small flannel blanket that I bring on the plane and try for a little nap.

I've spent nights at airports around the US and even in an a/c terminal, it's terribly uncomfortable. Nothing like being able to go horizontal. If you do the airport, bring the blowup raft like BarbiJKM suggested. If I were able to sleep over on the flight before landing in PPT, then maybe staying in the airport wouldn't be so bad. If I arrived tired, I'd pay just about anything to get on a soft bed and sleep for three or four hours. As mentioned, maybe take a later flight to BB and sleep longer in your motel room.

Didn't mean the inside bar/cafe, I'm taking about the one on the north side that you access from the outside. The cafe is open all night long.

The luggage place that you can store luggage may not be open when one arrives late at night. That was the case for us.

Tiki,

When was the last time you were there and found the cafe open in the middle of the night? The upstairs cafe (outside security), on second floor above/near the snack bar, was closed the last few times time we departed on an 11:30 p.m. flight (mid-November 2007 and mid-April 2008). Maybe it was just the specific nights, but they don't seem to be open all night anymore, at least not every night... just the snack bar on the ground floor, and the small bar inside security in the second floor lounge departure area.
