Hello everyone, thanks for all your hints and tips. We are staying in Moorea probably 2 nights at teh beginning of our honeymoon. We want to see the breathtaking sights - not so bothered about snorkelling as we will be doing that later on (maybe Kia Ora Sauvage) - or whether its OWB or Beach bungalows. We are looking for a quiet hotel (to recover from the flight from London) in an amazing location with great views onto the mountains. From the beach resorts it seems the Interconti or the Pearl have the best backdrop - not too populated an area - with high mountains behind them. Any opinions anyone about the most breathtaking place to stay please?

Well....the 2 hotels with the most breathtaking views of the island are not 5 Star luxurious hotels...they are closer to 2 stars. They woud be Club Bali Hai and Kaveka. They are both located in Cooks Bay and easily have the best view of the island of any on Moorea. I'm not sure they'd meet your other criteria though.

Ditto Patti's reply. All of the major hotels face outwards to the sea. Mountains behind them are not particularly spectacular, and are obscured by palm trees anyway.
CBH and Kaveka are located on Cooks Bay - half of the collapsed caldera of an ancient volcano. So your views are to the ancient lava dome across the bay, Mt Rotui, and of the caldera rim where Moua Roa and Moua Puta predominate.
Your Moorea hotel location choices are: sunrises and sea sunsets and sea mountains and bay

There are some nice pensions in the hills on Mo'orea but people who like hotels like to stay along the water. The pensions, while small and more like a b&b, are wonderful places to stay. They are usually quiet and the people you do meet will be locals and experienced global travelers. Most do not have a/c though.

Anitafiona, If you want something in the hills, check out Village Temanoha. I haven't stayed there and Barbi or Hamara might have more info but I've looked into it for a future stay.

Fare Hamara, Hamara's rental, is also on the hillside overlooking Opunohu Bay.

The mountain views from the Moorea Intercontinental are breathtaking, in my opinion. The rooms do not face the mountains, but the mountains surround the property.

Thanks everyone and thanks BarbiJKM,InterConti it is then...next question...best bungalow at the IC? we will only be going for a garden bungalow to save money for our stay in KOS - so if anyone can recommend a bungalow in a quiet location in the Interconti, that would be v helpful! we dont need to be anywhere near anything - the better the view - mountians or sea- the better! which one shall i ask for? thank you
