I have stayed at both hotels and prefer the room and grounds at the Intercontinental, though we did not swim nor snorkel at either, just stayed for one night on arrival in Papeete. As Poehere says, the IC is also closer to town and a more convenient location.

Many thanks to you all. I meant to say we will only be staying in the 'cheaper' rooms at either hotel ie Garden room - not a bungalow or anything. But I think we will stick with the IC for convenience to town etc.

The garden rooms at the IC in Papeete are very nice. The beach there is not the greatest, but it's not horrible. Plan to get your snorkeling done while you're in Moorea! The grounds and pool and everything else about the hotel is lovely. Plan to eat many of your meals in town, because the IC restaurants are pretty expensive.
