We are now trying to decide on Moorea accommodation and its down to between these two places - as you can tell we are only looking at less expensive options but somewhere with a nice beach for swimming & snorkelling, walking distance to shops/ restuarants etc. I gather these two properties are very close anyway but any comments plus or negative about either eg standard of rooms, the beach, friendliness etc ? Reviews seem to mostly be OK (you always get one negative one that throws you!). We can only get one of the cheapest garden rooms at Les Tipaniers which Im sure isnt going to be great but its just a room. Moorea Fare Miti does offer a kitchenette but will be more expensive. Thanks

Barbi will be chiming in here shortly as Fare Miti is her absolute favorite place. Also, you could do a search on this site for Fare Miti and read some of her comments.

We really love Les Tipand have stayed there 4 times, but in a garden bungalow with kitchen. My Dad stayed 2 weeks in a basic garden room, and it was fine for the price. The rooms are basic, but clean, and have large bathrooms. If you stay in the end unit (Dad did), there is an extra (screened) window for ventilation. The downside is the walls are thin, so you will hear your neighbors. And if you have a few days of rain, there isn't a nice sitting area to wait it out in the room. The property of Les Tips is great. 2 good restaurants, a nice (small) beach, good snorkeling, and we have always been treated well by the staff. For us it is our first choice, but I would consider Fare Miti if I couldn't stay at Les Tips. One thing important to me is there are screens on the windows at Les Tip, since I'm one of those Mosquito magnets.

Here I am, chiming in about Fare Miti! Actually, I am very familiar with both properties... There are pros and cons to each.
1. Beaches: Fare Miti is located on a much nicer, bigger, longer beach than Les Tips. However, there are not any beach chairs at Miti. At Les Tips, they have these wooden platform chairs to lie on (usually all taken). You cannot walk a long ways down the beach at Les Tips the way you can at Miti. Les Tips has "rules" that Miti does not: No picnics on the beach, for example... At Miti, you could barbecue your dinner on the beach if you wanted, and no one would care.
2. Location: Both are within easy walking distance to stores and restaurants. Le Petit Village shopping center is about smack in the middle between the two properties. Miti might be a tad closer... Les Tips has a beach restaurant and a dinner restaurant on the property, and Miti does not.
3. Bungalows: The bungalows at Miti are bigger, airier, more spread out than at Les Tips. But there is no housekeeping service at Miti, and you get daily service at Les Tips. The kitchenette is really a big plus at Miti, no comparison to the garden room at Les Tips. (Les Tips does offer kichen bungalows). Miti's bungalows are "rustic," in that some need minor repairs. If a cracked tile in the bathroom bothers you, stay at Les Tips!
4. Ambience: Les Tips is definitely French. Miti is more Tahitian.
I prefer Miti over Les Tips, but that's a personal preference and others might disagree. We have dear friends who stay every summer at Les Tips while we are at Miti, and they adore their place as much as we adore ours! If you email me at BarbiJKM@aol.com and put "Moorea" in the subject line, I'll be glad to send you a link to my online photos of the Miti bungalows and property.
Hope this helps~

Many thanks to you both - have been away for a few days so have just read your comments. Very Helpful. Les Tips have now offered us a garden bungalow with kitchen so just trying to make up our minds but will probably go with that. We probably wont be doing any cooking (just breakfast and perhaps making lunch) but the bigger space would be better. I assume the garden bunglows w/kitchen are separate fares whereas the Garden room is in a block ?
I do like the idea of having bigger beach though especially being able to go for longer walks and no rules! Does no picnics on the beach mean you can't sit and eat a sandwich on the beach?

Sorry one more question - re Fare Miti - do you kniw if they accept credit cards? Their webpage just says payment in cash or check which isnt really convenient and they want 50% deposit. Assume you have managed seeing you have stayed here several times.

Kiwi,
Fare Miti does not (yet) accept credit cards, but they are in the process of getting set up for it (eventually). They require you to wire a deposit from your bank account to their bank account, which is not an unusual procedure for small pensions in FP. You could probably do this with funds from a credit card through your bank that issued the card.
You pay the balance in Tahitian francs, which you can get at the Tahiti airport bank when you arrive. The airport bank does currency exchange for incoming international flight arrivals, even in the middle of the night.

OK thanks for that. I think we will stick with Les Tips in that case as its easier but will have a look at Fare Miti while we are there. Thanks for all your very helpful info.
