Fire tower near Fakarava airport

Looking at the islands of FP on Google Earth is a real kick. I think it was Patti that got me started on it. I am confused, however, about something. I was looking for the fire tower that's located between the airport and Rotoava and can't find it. It's really quite an imposing structure so it baffles me that it's not visible. Can someone who has been to Fakarava recently tell me if it's gone?

I didn't see it, but then again, I didn't look for it. Where exactly was it supposed to be located? Half way? Nearer to the airport? or Town? near the lagoon, the oceanside?
I did see a big ol' cell phone tower near the south pass that made me laugh a bit. It would have looked a lot nicer if they had mad it into a giant palm tree like they do with some of them here in Vegas.
And yes, Google Earth is a total blast to play around with. I can spend hours with it.

I just putzed around Fakarava for a while on Google Earth and I don't see it anywhere either. How do you know of it? Did you see it there or just hear about it from someone?

Hi Patti,
We were on Fakarava in 2004 and from Pension Havaiki on the far side of Rotoava (probably 2 miles away) we could see the fire tower sticking up. It sat on the ocean side of the atoll about half way between the village and the airport. We rode bikes out to it one day - it was huge, made out of concrete and very hard to miss. But it looked like it was starting to fall apart. The ladder to the top was broken and looked very dangerous - so maybe they demolished it. It's such a huge landmark that not seeing it made me feel like I had been hallucinating.

The satellite photos you see on Google Earth come from one of several different providers who commission satellite photography. If a fly-over hasn't been commmissioned since the tower was built, that would explain things.

Let me clarify. The fire tower was OLD, like 60 or 70 years old. They used to build fires on the top platform to warn ships of the atoll and reefs - an ancient type of lighthouse. It hasn't been used in years, according to people we spoke to in the village. Hope that explains it better.

Marshamousse, the old light house was build from a mixture of concrete and dead coral in 1957 and is part of "Tahitian Heritage", still there, the google earth coordinates are (hope you can find that) 16°02'57-93"S and 145°38'00-36"O
the new one (between airport and pass) is: 16°04'09-75"S and 145°41'47-82"O the new one looks light a lightpole
