This is a nice forum with a lot og useful information.
We fly from L.A to spend July sailing Raiatea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Taha, Maupiti and back to Raiatea. I assume it is better access to stereo-, diving equipment, etc. in L.A than in PF. In order to not drag many of our items (like 2 kayaks) back home from PF, do any have advice on how to get rid of items like these? Shops buying used items, advertisement in the newspaper, etc.? Thanks in advance!

I am wondering why you would bring a stereo and 2 kayaks on your trip. I think that the charges would be outrageous to bring those items. Why are you bringing kayaks with you? If you could explain the necessity for items that you plan on bringing, people could advise on alternatives to what you feel you need to bring.

It would probably be best to leave your items as gifts for the local people. I doubt you will have the time or inclination once there to deal with selling items.

Most local people sell stuff by word-of-mouth or by tacking a paper notice on a bulletin board at the nearest grocery store. You would need a way for people to contact you if interested, i.e., a local phone number (available when you purchase a vini SIM card for an unlocked GSM 900 cell phone) or a local contact person, to sell this way. If you are sailing, you are likely to have people express interest in your gear along the way, and you might want to sell it when that happens, towards the end of your trip, or on Raiatea when you finish the sail. When docked, you might want to display your stuff with "A vende" signs on it.

We are back after 3 weeks of fantastic sailing between the islands. Got rid of the stuff; however, I was surprised to find such a selection og goods in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Especially the main supermarket in Fare at Huahine was impressive with about 100 different types of french wine. USD 20 for a very acceptable wine is nothing to complain about! So was 3 days of rain in 3 weeks and constant temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius!

There is a weekly paper called "Paru Vendu" which takes your add for free. It is distributed on many islands for free as well.
Word of caution, when bringing that kind of stuff with you they may have you pay a lot of duty upon arriving... don't know if it would really be worth it
SHould you bring it though and need to get rid of it at the end of your vacation I'll gladly give you my address LOL

Thanks Poehere, but as written above I got rid of the stuff so we didnt have to carry it back.
However, maybe you can help me with this one: At Huahine the beach Teapaa was one of our favourites. We met a friendly man (Sikki?) who was taking care of the beach and had liked to send him a small present. Would you have an advice on how to get in touch with him? I know the people at the seaside restaurant in Fare might be able to locate him.

Do you mean the beach at the old Hana Iti site? We met a friendly man taking care of the beach there. If you don't get a response from Poehere, I could ask someone I know in Huahine.

Yes thanks, if there was a hotel at Teapaa until not too long ago, that must be the beach and that must be our man!
