Hello all,

My wife and I honeymooned in Moorea/Bora Bora/Tahaa a couple of years ago. Due to the cost and being a young couple we did not purchase many souvenirs and we have regretted it ever sense. My wife really liked these hand carved wood (I believe coconut wood) tiki's, bowls, etc, that could be found being sold by vendors outside of the Moorea Beachcomber and at several shops. Does anyone know if there is a way I could purchase one of these items and have it shipped back to me here in the USA?

I appreciate any help.

Rook,

What exactly are you looking for? I will be there in a couple of months and if it's not too big, I may be able to bring something back.

I'm not 100% sure. They had various bowl, like chip and dip bowls or salad bowls that were very nice. They also had nice tiki masks or tiki statuettes. I'll try to find pictures on the internet. I apprechiate the offer. Perhaps an easier option would be to ask if any of the stores or vendors would sell to me direct, and get their email address for me (and others on here as well.)

Rook,

I will be going to Moorea soon too, and back at the end of August. If you can find a photo of anything you like on the internet and email it to me, I could perhaps find you something similar on Moorea and mail it to you from AZ when we get home. Or I could look for things there that I think you might like, take a digital picture and email it back to you before buying.

I'll be there during the month-long Heiva festival, and will be going to the artisan exposition in Papeete, where many of the craftspeople from the outer islands display their crafts, so there is likely to be a good selection! I'll also be staying nearby the Moorea IC, so could lobby-shop there too if you prefer.

Email me at BarbiJKM@aol.com. I'll be glad to help if I can!

P.S. Take a look at the "handcraft" photo on this page; is this the kind of thing you are looking for?

If Barbi doesn't take care of you before I go, I'll look at some shops and see. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that any of the vendors will have any type of web site or web ordering.

Barbi, can you forward me any photos you get on the off chance you can't pick something up?

Barbi and Island Boy,

You are both very generous and gracious to make these offers. Barbi, the handicraft picture is exactly what I am thinking of. I'm not set on any one thing, just something wood, that color of wood, and that is clearly from Tahiti (or tropical) when you see it. I'll email you directly Barbi.

Rook,

There is a store in Le Petit Village shopping area called Arts Polynesiens, which has a lot of these carvings, including some from the Marquesas, that I think is what you are looking for.

I'll send you some photos from Moorea next week, so send me your email addy.
