Someone is asking about wheelchair accessibility in the islands...specifically Moorea and Bora Bora.
Do you have any knowledge to how accessible the hotels and restaurants are there on Bora Bora? Not necessarily the top 5 star resorts...but more the mid range ones.
Also, what about flying on Air Tahiti? Do they have the chair lifters like ATN has?

Hi Patti. The new (and I assume the earlier releases) of the Jan Prince book lists wheelchair accessability at most of the resorts and hotels in FP. I have the book but have not finished reading it yet, but if you have any specific hotels and restaurants that you need this info on, I'll go directly to these and post it here if you like.

If the person can stand/walk a little with help Air Tahiti will supply a wheelchair prior to boarding and help him/her on board and await the passenger at destination with a wheelchair. If the person cannot walk at all, AT has a special chair that lifts over the stairways to board the plane.
Most resorts indeed (especially the newer ones) are completely outfitted for wheelchairs. Only prob could be the tiles they use in certain pathways which may not be too comfortable when rolling over them (entrance Moana, HBB,) or entrances to motu resorts, getting in and out of shuttle boats and onto (small) stairways. Maitai, Sofitel are ok. Resto like Bloody Marys and Kaina hut, due to sand floor would not be accessible unless the person is carried in. Taxi can be a prob depending on what car model they use! But people here are very friendly and considerate towards handicaped persons!

I may add, life can be tough here in a wheelchair, when viewing certain road conditions, no sidewalks, or like Papeete sidewalks with potholes, uneven laid tiles and so....pffff not easy task, even for a person able to walk. A lot of public areas (especially outer islands) are sand covered and you can imagine the mess after a good tropical rainstorm.
The Sheraton Moorea is easy going in, the Intercontinental also, Pearl resort very wobbly and long way to go around the large staircase going down to the resto, Ia Ora and Kaveka (main entrance)are ok too.

Thanks Poehere. I passed your info on to her along with what I found in Jan Princes book. What a great topic of conversation. It's just not something that ever gets brought up. Thanks again.
Here's what I found hotel wise from Jan Prince's Guide book...
Moorea: Sofitel: 3 bungalows for handicapped guests. Pearl: 2 garden bungalows for guests in wheelchairs. Plus wide cement paths and elevator. Sheraton: has units for guests in wheelchairs. Intercontinental: 2 handicapped lanai rooms.
Bora Bora: Intercontinental Le Moana: 2 Beach Bungalows are wheel chair accessible. Novotel: 4 reduced mobility rooms Bora Bora Nui: 4 handicapped rooms Bora Bora Pearl: 3 over water bungalows equipped for wheelchairs. Plus wide cement paths and elevator.

I'm curious about the last 2 Bora Bora resorts. I wonder how easy it is to get someone in a wheelchair onto their boats? I know the one to the Sofitel Motu wasn't easy for even an able-bodied person (I remember almost falling into it when I was coming back from getting my stitches...I was probably a bit woozy).

I know. That's what I wonder too. Although they have handicapped rooms, I can't imagine getting in and out of the little transfer boats.
All in all, from what I have figured out from that little bit of research Moorea would be workable...difficult...but workable. Bora Bora would really be a stretch.

LOL, indeed if one really thinks about it... not an easy task, I guess getting in and out of the shuttle boats would have to be done via the staff docks (due to freight delivery etc no steps) BB could be done as well but like the "main" town it just one big sand pit...
