Hello, I'm Sonja from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Going to the Pacific is an around the world trip for us and very expensive !! I think it will be a once in a lifetime trip, so it must be very special !! We went to Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican R. and now we are looking for the most beautifull beaches in the world.... First the Cook Islands (not too expensive at Rarotonga and Aitutaki) and we want to finish our trip in Fr. Polynesia for a week. Everybody is talking about the natural beauty of Bora Bora.
We are looking for a hotel with OWB's and not too many tourists but with a bar and good food. White sand and palmtrees above water and crystal clear water like postcards. We both love snorkling and feed (or catch) fishes. Also just lay down and enjoy the view with a cold beer. I think of a middleclass hotel.
Just looking for a dreamhotel. If someone has other ideas (for example a stay at Moorea of Tahaa) please let me know. It doens't have to be Bora Bora for sure !! Thanks.

What kind of budget are you looking for for the overwater bungalow? There are not many less-expensive options are out there for those. For the white sand beaches & palm trees, if you are you looking for long, long beaches and few to no people, the Tuamotus like Rangiroa and Fakarava and Manihi are more what you're looking for (but they're flat so you don't get the beautiful mountains to look at). Most of the Society Islands (Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha'a, Huahine, etc.) don't have long beaches (many actually bring in sand for the resorts to make a beach).
Bora Bora's lagoon is beautiful, but it's the most "touristy" island. You might like Le Taha'a (the resort) on Taha'a (the island) better for solitude. I haven't been there myself, but it gets great reviews here by those who've gone.
Editted to add that Le Taha'a is far from an inexpensive choice, though!

At Relais Mahana in Huahine, there is a very long white sand beach, but it is not powdery sand. There are also no over water bungalows at the Relais Mahana. But if you need a long beach, there it is plus great snorkeling right there. There are pensions in Bora Bora with Chez NoNo being right next to the best beach in Bora Bora, but Chez NoNo is more like a hostel experience. If you look at the resorts online in French Polynesia, you will get an idea of how much an over water bungalow is for a night. If that fits into your budget, people on this forum can guide you to the best resort for you in French Polynesia.

Hi ! Just to be specific: I'm not looking for long beaches... I've seen that in the Caribbean. But I think some of the hotels on the motu's have some sandy (private) beaches/area ? We love to have people around us (specially at the bar ;-) ), but we do not like crowdy hotels..... We can spent max. 2000 US Dollars each. So this is like 4 nights orso ?? I read about Huahine or Moorea. Are they less expensive ? Some people say that the expectation of 'heaven on earth' can only be found on the motu's and not (or less) on the bigger islands, such as Tahiti. Is that true ??

This most excellent website is run by a travel expert for Polynesia. Look for the links and contact him for his best offer of a place to stay on Bora Bora. There may be some offers of pay for four nights and get the next night free or some such offer. You must go to Bora Bora !

Maybe I missed it, but what season are you planning on going during? The off season should be more affordable for an OWB.

Oh, I'm sorry ! We want to go in the low season in March 2009. Now I just looked at some prices from an agency here in Europe (in Euro's) but I see a huge gap ! Le Maitai (Bora Bora), and the Pearl Resorts on Moorea, Manihi and Tikehau are sort of the same prices (around 450 Euro p.p.p.n.). But then I see Raiatea Hawaiki Nui and the price is 285 Euro p.p.p.n. How is that possible ?? These prices are for OWB. The hotel looks very good ! If these are my options, then we want to go to Bora Bora for sure.....
I will look at the links for sure ! Thanks for the tip.
