Anyone know if the Kia Ora Rangiroa is going to undertake renovations beginning in December of 2008?

Would it be generally a bad idea to stay at a hotel while they are renovating? Some of the hotel reviews I've read had some horror stories.

Opinions please?

It depends on how extensive the planned renovations are. If it is simply updating some rooms, it shouldn't interfere with your stay. If they plan on closing some of the restaurants, etc. it may affect you. I stayed there in 2006 and I had no complaints at all. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and my room was clean and well-maintained. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay there.

Have you heard a renovation rumor, ifloat, or are you just asking generally because some hotels do a quick yearly spruce-up?

last renovations OWB were done in 2006, they are planning for somewhere in 2009 part of the garden bungalows but have no fixed date yet. Normally the bungalow renovations should not interfere with your stay

I had read on another forum that they were renovating.

Just don't want to hear saws and hammers early in the am ! And as long as the restaurant is not involved it's all fine with me. Thanks for the info.

Poehere (or anyone else), if you hear any more specifics, or if there are changes to the plan, could you keep us informed? We always go to Rangiroa and stay at the KOS (although we have considered the Relais de Josephine. Maybe some day...).

I have freakishly keen hearing so it would be better for my sanity to steer well clear of any renovations. My poor husband (who has totally normal hearing) will wearily attest to how faint noises seem loud to me, since he has to bear my saying "can you hear that?? It's so loud. I can't sleep!!"

I've been at both the Sheraton Moorea and Te Tiare while they were doing renovations and I didn't find it at all disturbing. Unless the hotel is doing major building/renovation, they keep the work very unobtrusive to guests. In fact, when I was last at the Moorea Sheraton, they were building a hot tub next to the pool. The workers built a wooden wall to hide the work and worked in a little cubbyhole of space so that they wouldn't disturb guests or ruin the beauty of the hotel. I felt bad for the poor guys toiling away in that cubbyhole in 90 degree heat.

I understand it is supposed to be a complete renovation. This is what I read in another forum....

The Overwater Bungalows will be totally redone. They will be more spacious and more luxurious.

All of the Garden Bungalows and Garden Suite Bungalows will be destroyed. They will be turned into small villas each having a private swimming pool. These bungalows will be much nicer and more expensive than our current Beach Bungalows. There will be one bedroom and two bedroom bungalows to accommodate families.

An Overwater Presidential Suite will be built on the far west end of the property. It will have an overwater swimming pool and an adjacent junior suite. The entrance to the overwater dock leading to the suite will be private and there will be a small video games room at the entrance which can also be used as a private business center.

During this period, all of the Beach Bungalows, Beach Suite Bungalows and Beach Deluxe Bungalows and the KIA ORA SAUVAGE will be totally operational.

The Overwater Bar will be destroyed and rebuilt. During this time, the Kahaia Lounge will serve as a temporary bar.

The Kitchen will be destroyed and rebuilt. A temporary kitchen will be set up allowing the chef to work normally.

The present "Fare Massage" will be turned into a Specialty Restaurant (details to come).

The tennis courts will be removed since very few guests use them and in the same area, we will do our new Spa with Massage Parlors and a Gym.

The tiles of the Swimming Pool will be replaced.

Wifi Internet will be installed for the entire hotel.

During the construction of the new bungalows, huge partitions will be put up to make the hotel more presentable.

The Kia Ora Sauvage will operate normally.

Renovations are slated to begin in Mid January 2009.

Sounds like a play at competition with the new Bora resorts.
