Thanks for the information everyone. I just heard from the travel agent I'm talking to that the Kia Ora is off her supplier's sell list for the duration of the renovation. Now I have to decide where else to stay for a couple of nights before the Haumana cruise. Does the Sauvage require a night at the main hotel first?

Any suggestions? I guess I would have to get from there to Rangiroa fairly early in the day. Manihi? Tikehau?

Yes, usually the Sauvage does require an overnight. I imagine it still will even with the renovation. Something to think about....the Kia Ora will probably be offering some GREAT prices during the renovation. Quite often they do during a major renovation.

I don't know whether to be totally excited or totally bummed out by the renovation. The Kia Ora has been, IMHO, one of the very best deals in FP in terms of valuefor money. The OWBs were within our budget and the food is always decent and reasonably priced (for FP). We love the laid-back feel of it (the fact that it's not spanking new is part of its charm).

Ifloat, I haven't been to Tikehau, just Manihi. The hotel itself was perfectly nice. As a diver, though, I infinitely prefer Rangiroa. At both Rangiroa and Manihi, I believe they will take you to snorkel just around the edge of the pass (oceanside) so you can get some better snorkeling in. Both places experienced heavy coral bleaching during el Nino, so while you can find coral/fish in both places in the lagoon from the beach or bungalow, you will see lots more life in the slightly cooler water oceanside. I would not advise snorkeling near any pass on your own, for safety reasons.

Ifloat,
If it's only for a couple of nights before a cruise, I wouldn't hesitate. I just booked with them and got a GREAT deal for a Beach Bungalow with Jacuzzi...I'm staying 3 nights. The reno work stops at 5pm. I'll be gone all day exploring anyway...!
