Loc: Las Vegas, NV G&C...that is so funny. Sort of like the little paper dolls the kids here are sending around the world. Don't know if you've had any come your way. But kids draw a doll on paper and then cut it out. Send it to various people they know around the country (and the world). Have them take a picture with it somewhere famous and then send it back. Then then have this doll with pictures of it visiting places all over the world. My niece sent me one named Flat Kathy. We took Kathy down to the Las Vegas Strip. Took her picture in front of the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign, at a few hotels, Hoover Dam,...under our Christmas tree on Christmas morning, and in our back yard with some very unusual snow that happened!
We could do one on here. Someone makes a paper doll (has to be Polynesian, of course), we take turns sending it to each other, take a couple pictures of it in our home towns, and nearby famous places (along with each of us in a picture too) and then send it on to the next person. Then we can all email our pictures to a specific person and they could make a slide show of the dolls travels and visits with all of us along with pictures of all of us. Might take us a year or more to comlete. But it might be fun!

I would like to participate,but I don't know if I should do it here now with some of the great things we have here in the summer when it is beautiful or should I do it when it's freezing and we might possibly have tons of snow (or maybe not, never know). I could do the picture with the over water bungalows here (the ice fishing houses in the winter on a lake). So let's move forward with this, please.

Loc: Las Vegas, NV LOL! Hmmm....but I'm not sure about drawing a good Polynesian doll. Lets see if someone else has a bit of artistic talent. If not I'll do it.
We'll need a colorful doll drawn on heavy paper or light cardboard. So that it will fold up and fit easily in an envelope. And is on sturdy enough paper that it will hold up to travel and quite a bit of wear and tear. They one I received was about 12-16 inches tall when folded out, probably about 6 inches wide. If we wanted to expedite the process, we could do two... a male and female doll and sent them off in different directions.
Let's see if anyone else is interested in this and if so, we'll start a new thread. Specifically about the doll...so that way we don't completely hijack Jephs sand thread.

Loc: Duluth, Minnesota How about going online and getting a Polynesian person picture? If the capability is there on your printer, you can print on heavy paper or else glue it onto heavier paper. I think it can just be the size of a legal envelope instead of having to be folded. Or as a former art teacher, I could draw one, but I like the idea of a print off of the net. So much easier. I feel it shouldn't be folded and more lightweight as this will be going international. I'm not trying to hijack your fab idea, just offering some suggestions.

Or maybe Poehere has someone is FP who would get the ball rolling with a drawing, a little sand,pics of Poehere and others of FP, and Joan could bring it back or anyone else could bring it back when they come to the US. Mailing takes awhile sometimes and sometimes not.Maybe the artist could glue some sand on the feet of the drawing. That way the sand would remain a little more intact. I have some art work by children that was done in Huahine. They have a way of drawing that definitely looks Polynesian and different from American child drawings. Some of the children used mud to paint with as Bobby Holcomb did. He even would do art on paper bags. One day I will post the art work on the site, in the fall. Joan, are you going to Huahine? If Poehere and Barbi can't think of anyone, Melanie DuPres did art classes with the children in Huahine and maybe she could get a child to do this. Can you tell I am so excited about this idea?

The doll is a GREAT idea! How about a Hinano lady doll? I can get a medium-to-large decal here, no bigger than about 12 inches tall, and we can affix it to some heavy cardboard or poster board and cut around the profile? Just an idea... let me know if I can help by getting something local to use while I'm on Moorea!
Poehere, you already mailed the sand? GREAT! But bring some extra to Moorea when you come and I will also mail it from Arizona to Canada when I get home. At least one batch of Bora Bora sand should make it through!

Loc: Canada It's incredible how this board and all of you work together with ideas.
Because all of you have been so incredibly helpful with my plight for sand, if you send that doll through this part of the world I promise to do my part and keep it going.
With the worlds largest nickel living here (LOL) I'm sure I can take a picture depicting this place and it's history to add to the group if you let me. I'd be honoured. You have all been so nice.
It's hard to explain in words the relevance of the sand to all of you but I'm glad my little request has brought about such an incredible project like this. I will let you know how things transpire...... I promise.

If we start it while Andy's daughter is here, I can get Poehere, Andy, me, and Jan P. photographed with the doll in FP before I leave Moorea, maybe get Rod June in Honolulu on the way home, and then take it home to AZ to photo next to a cactus in the desert, and send it on to Las Vegas to Patti. We can include sand in the lamination, maybe a few grains of Jeph's sand, because that's how this all started! I can laminate it when I get home and send it on to Patti, who can send it on from there. We need to start another post, with copy and pastes from this one...

Colorful is a must. Has to look all Polynesian. Probably dressed in a pareo. The doll has to have on a lei too, especially if it's a girl. If it's a boy, he probably needs some tatoos. :-) As I suggested, we could do one of each and send them out in different directions around the world.
The one I had received was done on thin poster board. Then it was covered on the back with clear packing tape, so it wouldn't tear and be a bit more durable in it's travels. Obvioulsy to fold, unfold, and refold every trip would cause damage at the folds. The sturdy tape backing seemed to prevent that.
So....should we have an adult draw one, or should we try to get a kid (like Andy's daughter) to do it? Not sure if she's interested or not though.

Barbi~ What do you think are the odds of finding proper constrcution materials over there at a reasonable price? Is that kind of stuff super over priced?
Heavy paper or light posterbord. Markers or crayons or colored pencils. That's probably all that would be needed. Along with a little creative artwork by Andy's daughter.
Laminating it when you get home is a great idea. Better than my suggesting of putting clear shipping tape on it.

Ohh..ohh...and we have to come up with a good name too. The one that was sent to me was Flat Cathy. I think we need a nice Tahitian name for it. And...if we do the boy and girl..then two nice names.
