I read in the accomodation-post that Sofitel Moorea is the best hotel on Moorea and rebuilt. I see that it has a good price too !! BUT: The airport is nearby..... Is that no problem with noise from airoplanes ? And another question: how is the water at that side of the island ? I'm looking for cristal blue with beautiful 'postcard' palmtrees...... And love to snorkle. I read that is has the best view.

Never stayed there so don't know about the noise, but here is a picture of the water.

No noise from the airport that I ever noticed, day or night. Never even saw a plane, but then sometimes we were off of the resort. The water is beyond divine there. Not much current except a little ways out. But I don't think the best snorkeling. I haven't been there for a few years, and I don't know if they still have the dive platform out there, but we took a kayak out to he dive platform and the snorkeling was great there. We tied off on the platform. In the morning before the sun rises, my husband would go out to the lookout above the Sofitel-the Temae lookout and watch the sun rise over Tahiti. He said it was absolutely amazing. I did not do it and could kick myself as I like to stay up late.

Tiny planes at the Moorea airport. You'll giggle at you question once you go there.

There aren't that many flights a day anyway. But...most of them are such small planes, you can barely even hear them a couple hundred feet away. And then don't fly directly over the property. Only over a few private homes. It won't be an issue at all for you.

The Sofitel Ia Ora has been completely renovated and really has shapen up in terms of service and quality. You'll have one of the most beautiful beaches of Moorea (sun will crawl behind the mountain around 4 pm) and an amazing view over Tahiti, including sunrises. The accor group has recently decided that their Polynesian resorts will cater at a higher level and it shows! only drawback may be on weekend days when resident families brunch and their kids take over the pool so to speak (but that happens in other hotels as well)
Ditto for the airport, it is very small and won't be a bother,

no noise from the big jets, just the small ones. some noise from the cars on the road with the loud sound systems. they park up on the hill and party.
new sofitel wont let you in unless you stay there or have dinner reservations. tourist or locals cant just walk in anymore.

We stayed at the Sofitel at the end of June and rented two bungalows for our party of 4. The room layout is very nice. The bathroom walls in both bungalows were stained and could use a repainting. Check-in and service was a "c" grade. For example, housekeeping would take towels and not fully restock them, condiment bar not restocked, dirty coffee pot supplied first day. Also, the clerks at the front desk were not helpful with sightseeing tips and times, unless you booked tours through the hotel.
We had two garden bungalows just a few hundred yards from the beach. Really lovely location, but we noticed that some "garden category" bungalows were set way back in the complex. Although the grounds are well maintained, we considered them to be in inferior locations - but at the same price. There was no bothersome noise from airplanes. The beach is groomed daily and the turquoise waters lovely for swimming. We did not see a lot of fish. Word of warning, we were told to make restaurant reservations (in either of the two restaurants) by 3pm each day or you do not eat there. Since it had nothing to do with the restaurant being full, perhaps it has to do with food supply ordering. The pool was never really busy, and we stayed 3 nights, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. It is a nice couples or family resort. We saw quite a few French famlies with toddlers. The beach area offshore is shallow with no big drop off which makes it a great play area for small children.

Thanks for your replies !! The picture looks great. I also read about the high prices for food. Maybe the solution is to book Half Board or Full Board?
Anyone have been on the Cook-Islands ?? Much cheaper and maybe even more beautifull ?? We will go there for 12 nights. Cannot find a forum.....

Be sure and check about weather in the Cook Islands. They do appear to have weather issues. One year when we were in Huahine in Feb, we had more overcast days and that was because of the cyclones in the Cooks. Then another year when we were in Huahine in Feb, the Cooks had cyclones before we came or were going to have cyclones after we left. I forget which.
