@holte

Thanks for the advice ! So you always go in Feb ? So I maybe have some good weather in March ??
Now I know why it is the cheaper period in March....
But in the Lonely Planet and at many travellersites they say that it is more the humidity and degrees that makes the difference. Were there a lot of damage after the cyclones on the Cook ??
I will sure look at the weathersites !!
We go to the Cooks because we have a maximum budget. From Europe it is very expensive to travel to the Pacific. For the flights only I will have to pay 6,700 USD for two persons from Amsterdam to Rarotonga (via London and LA), Rarotonga to Papeete and Papeete to Amsterdam.
So with 2 nights LA, 12 nights Cook and 5 nights Fr. Polynesia, my budget is up to the limit !
That's why I'm seeking for a hotel with the WOW-factor in Fr. Polynesia and wich I can pay for....... It's the last stop of our dreamvacation.

I have never been to the Cooks, but have been interested in going there so I have kept a very loose eye on the weather there. I believe there was damage in the Cooks, but the biggest storm I remember was 4 years ago, I think, when we were in Huahine, French Polynesia. So my memory of what happened in the Cooks is hazy. If you look on this site, there is a man named Lord Balfour who I believe has gone to the Cooks many times. Plug his name in to see his discussions. Instead of spending so much time in the Cooks, how about staying at a pension in FP for a few days and then end with your dream over water bungalow? The weather is unpredictable in FP as it is anywhere. I have listened to the weather forecast here in my home when they say it is sunny and it is pouring rain outside. I see that you like to snorkel. When it is raining in FP, there is no reason not to go in the water. It is so nice and warm in the water as well as warm outside. The resorts also provide huge umbrellas so if there is a downpour, I sit under my umbrella and read and swim in the pool. But I am a total outdoor lover of FP.

As you must have read, there is little within walking distance of the Sofitel. Are you planning to rent a car? We did because of the option it gave us to explore the island at our leisure. We did not care for the menu options at the Sofitel as we found more desirable choices elsewhere for similar prices or to work within our budget. This is especially true of breakfast. Check out my recent post under Moorea Misc. - "Moorea Restaurants, Roulottes and Groceries".

There are some great pensions on Moorea as mentioned. Some have easy access to a grocery with out having to rent a car. Then you could book a tour or rent a car for a day if desired. Finish up with a booking in the overwater of your dreams.

Just got back from Sofitel Moorea. Very nice rooms and great beach. Lacked personality but was very enjoyable. Food prices were very high even for Tahiti. $40 for a burger is just plain ridiculous
