I was just notified by our travel agent that our departing Air Tahiti Nui flight in November has been changed--instead of leaving at 10pm we now don't leave until 1:00 am. We arrive from Bora Bora at 8pm (the latest flight!) Any ideas on how to spend those 5 hours--do we dare leave the terminal? Suggestions?

Fly over a few hours earlier, store your luggage, take Le Truck down to the square in Papeete and enjoy the roulottes and the local scene till 9:30 then taxi back.

We always take the latest flight to Papeete and then store our luggage in the luggage place. We take Le Truck to the plaza to which Submarine refers and enjoy what they have to offer. We take Le Truck back, but I think I recommend a taxi on the way back to the airport. It's a great time.

Might want to check what time your resort is going to kick you out if you didn't overbook your trip. A day room isn't really worth it if they bounce you at 1 p.m. and you don't leave til 8. Your best shopping is in Papeete too, especially for pearls.

I would definitely store my luggage and go down into Papeete. You could have a nice dinner and/or sit by the harbor and read a book by streetlight. At any rate you'll be by the water for your last precious hours in Tahiti.
Just be careful to get back to the luggage consigne in plenty of time to get in line for your flight. There will be lots of others trying to pick up their luggage too.
You can check on store hours for shopping by looking in any of the Tahiti magazines for stores and calling around while you're on vacation. Some of them may be open that late, I don't know (I have never been in Papeete at night).

I think it's around 6 that almost all of them are closed so I would try to get there around 4 to have some shopping time.

we have to leave Bora Bora on the 8 o'clock flight (hopefully the hotel will hold our luggage and let us clean up before the flight) so it sounds like most shops will be close by the time we reach Papeete. We could still take a taxi and have dinner and be back in plenty of time before our 1 am flight--I will remember to keep out a good book to read too!! Thanks for all the ideas--

The airport is very small and there is no place you could seat in comfort and read a book. Probably the best is to go outside to the little shack where women sell flowers, there are some benches there, but at night it might be dark. I would go for a nice dinner, maybe take a cab to Intercontinental and have a nice meal, they might have a show there too...

I remember a lot of shops being openend in Papeete late at night on the weekend. Not sure what happens on the weekdays. You should have just enough time to taxi in and out of downtown and the wharf for a quick meal at the roulottes. Le Truck is a good transportation option as well. Makes sure on your way back to the airport that you get off at the right stop at the airport and the let the driver know that. I think for the locals, saying "Faaa" doesn't necessarily mean the aiport to them.
