You should try 8 hours of waiting a slow Sunday night before the flight!
We were not looking forward to this aspect of the trip at all, before our 8 hour trip to L.A (and another 11 hours to Paris).
However, leave the airport. Your luggage may be picked up until at least 11pm, so head downtown and get a meal at the square. No alcohol, but a great variety in pizza, chinese, pancakes, fish and meat at decent prices.
The last shopping may be done at the airport where many shops are open until departure. Anyhow, shopping is probably better at your local mall in Washington!
Check-in lines normally open 3 hours before departures and once you are through security you find much better leather chairs for relaxing...
Experienced travellers eat dinner before entering the plane, bring a bottle of water and some snacks making you independent of delays and airplane meals. At this hour, you are ready to SLEEP!

I think a novel would do the trick ^..^ while sitting with the woman that sell flowers.
