Thalasso or... ?

I'm just starting to plan a trip to Bora Bora (only) for January. The Thalasso looks ideal for what I want (which is definitely overwater bungalow, and spa is a plus). I like how modern and spacious it is; I don't need the total polynesian style decor. ***BUT what would be a good second choice if I wanted to go a bit less pricey?? (I've gotten only one agent quote so far for: LAX-PPT air, 6 nights Thalasso, air transfers from PPT to Bora Bora for $7200- one person/single rate).
Thanks for any advice!

Can anyone offer their opinions on a few resorts on BB? I've read a ton on the site but seem to become more confused on where to stay! I know this:
1. I want to stay on a Motu, not the main island; 2. Want OWB; 3. Cannot afford St. Regis, 4 Seasons, Nui; 4. Thalasso is my ideal choice but a stretch on $$
I am basically confused about the remaining options of Pearl Beach Resort, Lagoon Resort, Sofitel Motu. I appreciate any comments on those 3 from people who've stayed there. I tend to like newer, more modern... (I usually go to St. Barts every year but have always wanted to see Bora Bora.)

Of your 3 choices, the Sofitel Motu would be my choice. We have stayed at the Sofitel Beach resort, but never on the Motu. We have friends who have stayed there. Good OWB's, great snorkeling on the backside, and easy access to the mainland. From what I've heard, access from the other resorts is a little more involved. The Motu has an on-demand shuttle to the mainland for groceries and places to eat.

I've only stayed at the Sofitel Motu, but I can tell you about it. It's small and private. The snorkelling on the backside of the motu is fabulous. The OWBs are spacious with a very nice bathroom (shower only, no bath). Two-level deck (shade and sun) plus a shower platform for washing off after swimming. There's coral by each bungalow so you can snorkel right there. Free kayaks, free snorkelling equipment. Beautiful setting. On-demand shuttle to the mainland and it's near a magasin (market/convenience store), several restaurants & snack shops. We loved it.

Le meridien is nice as well. Just next door to the Thalasso. You really can not go wrong with any of these.

Thanks for that suggestion, Suki! I'm now on the 2 island track. I think it will be either the Pearls or the ICs on Moorea/Bora Bora.

Hi AHowell and welcome, we have stayed at BB Pearl in O/W # 35. I was just reading your other post "another newbie question" and if you are happy to just lie around and check out the view (which is what I do when I go to BB) then you will not be disappointed with BB Pearl. Pearl also offers a free shuttle service a couple of times a day to go into Vaitape if you need to get supplies etc.
