Yes, you can afford Tahaa, there are alternatives as good in service and accommodation as le relais chateau but on a smaller scale!
I guess BB is a sort of "have to do once in a lifetime" island, with the lagoon colors just about unequaled, it is true BB is a little overdeveloped and the main island is not as beautiful as Moorea. All society islands (Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Maupiti, BB are high volcanic islands with mountains and a vegetation which is similar. DIfference between them is the development in tourist sector (n° hotels/resorts) and infra structure. BB and Moorea Tahiti being the most developped, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Maupiti rural authentic islands. Tuamotu, Tikehau, Rangiroa, Fakarava etc being atolls with a totally different character
Ahowel it may help if you indicate, besides beach, what you expect in terms of service level and activities/outings (restaurants, water sports yes or no, etc), that will help making a selection on hotels/resorts and islands

I'm probably biased when it comes to BB, because Cath and I got married there, but yes, it is getting over developed. But anyone who wants to see FP has to at least once, go to Bora Bora. The name says it all! When you think of paradise - you think Bora Bora (remember the movie Triple X?). Everyone has a different opinion of BB, that is probably why it is SO hard to pick which resort to stay at. Some like the convenience of Matira - some like the isolation of the Motu resorts. Some like a shuttle connection whenever they want - others like the big modern rooms with high speed internet access. Each to their own. We have our favourite resorts, but we are still trying others - because we CAN. We've stayed at Club Med (BB and Moorea), Le Meridien BB (wedding), Pearl BB, Le Taha'a, Thalasso BB, IC Tahiti and Moorea and Soffitel Tahiti. Our next trip will be Raddison Tahiti, Le Meridien and Soffitel Motu BB and Kia Ora Rangiroa. Why not? We've met wonderful people at every place we have stayed, but meeting in person at the IC Tahiti someone that we first met here - on Tahiti Explorer (Steve) - is definitely a highlight. This site is by far the friendliest, most offering site I have ever had the privilege to be part of. All of you have kept Tahiti and her islands at the tip of my fingers daily. Thank you. Gary.

Split it. Each island is so different. Mo'orea is very genuine and has a local feel. BB has the great lagoon and Mt. Otemanu to gaze at all day.
