Sorry it took me a month to post this. We spent 5 nights in Maupiti as the last portion of our trip in FP. I was worried that we wouldn't like it, because it sounded a bit rustic and lonesome. It's definitely not for everyone. But, we loved it and want to go back again! We stayed at Kuriri Village (all the places on Maupiti are B&Bs, there are no hotels). It was on the ocean side of the motu, which was a little windy, but good, because it was cooler at night. You must buy a meal plan (breakfast and dinner) there, because there's no restaurant on the island. Dinners are served Waltons-style at a big table (8 people). We were the only Americans. Most visitors are French, so it helps if you brush up on your French before you go, for dinnertime conversations. There were a few Italian couples and a Canadian couple there while we were there. The food was very good, though you have to like fish because it is served at every meal except breakfast, and raw fish in various forms turned up at least 4 times while we were there.
The accomodations were nice. If you are the type that needs gourmet meals and a/c, you would not enjoy Maupiti. You shouldn't even bother bringing a hair dryer, as you can't use it (solar power). I didn't bother, as I figured it would be warm enough that my hair could air dry.
But, if you like to meet interesting people, see the real FP and swim in clear lagoons, this is the place. We had a mosquito net. We had heard about Dengue Fever, so we brought bug spray and mosquito coils with us (and the holder for the coils). They had mosquito coils in our room. We used them, though we didn't seem to need them. (They have a lot fewer mosquitoes than we have in Washington DC.) And, they have "hot water heaters" in the rooms now. They tend to cycle hot and cold, but it's better than just cold water.
Anyway, we went snorkeling one day on the other motu. It was the best snorkeling since 6 years ago in Bora Bora (on an organized trip). This time, we were in 4 feet of water, which made it easier to snorkel for a long time. And, it was free! The snorkeling in front of the B&B is also pretty good. Though, we spent more time looking for sharks than fish. The sharks seem to visit at lunchtime and we could spot them from the whale tower. We got a picture of one about 10 feet away in less than 3 feet of water. You know that they are harmless, but it is still very freaky to see a 4 or 5 foot shark between you and the shore!
Another day, we hiked up the big mountain with an Italian couple! It was fun, though it was more like mountain climbing than hiking. We rented bicycles and rode around the island. One day, when we went to the main beach on the island, we were the only people there. We walked across to the motu. I wish we had more time to spend on the motu, but we walked right back. For me to say that we walked across is amazing, since I am only 5'1" and I could walk the entire way without standing on my tiptoes.
Anyway, Maupiti was wonderful and I can't wait to go back. If anyone has specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Awesome Finley GREAT report stood at Pension Papahani in Jan 2008 same motu cool aerport huh great views,lagoon,and people the place where the dogs really outnumber da tourists did you try da maupiti express aka vomit express in rough waters always fun in FP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FP4LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the report, finley! We have been very curious about Maupiti, it sounds very nice. How would you compare it with Huahine?

Yes it was wonderful and we did see a lot of dogs on the motu. We did not do the Maupiti Express, although we did see it come through the pass one day near us when we were snorkeling. We took the short flight from BB.

Maupiti is very different from Huahine in some ways. It's more of a motu experience rather than an island experience. But, the main island is easier to get around (you can bike around it in less than an hour). And, there's less traffic.
The locals are even friendlier in Maupiti. In fact, we had returned our bikes one day and were walking back to the dock to be picked up by our boat when a local stopped and gave us a ride in the back of a pickup truck.
I also think the water is better (clearer) in Maupiti and the snorkeling is more interesting. There are no resorts, though. So, if you must have an air conditioned resort with consistent hot water, I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise, it's great!
