Hi
We are going on the princess cruise in french polynesia next month. We really are not that into organized excursions. On some days we want to just head to a beach and snorkle.
We were thinking of renting a scooter. Is this possible? Do they have those? is it possible to just drive to a beach and jump in and snorkle?

Bora Bora Cruises
TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

Yes you could do that on the different islands that you visit (Moorea, Raiatea, Huahine, Tahaa and Bora Bora but you should know that most accidents are with scooters and it would definitely spoil your holiday! Raiatea and Tahaa have virtually no beaches (Tahaa they'll take you to a motu).

On Moorea and Huahine I would rent a car (beautiful to drive around in safety and stop wherever you want, both have couple of nice beaches)
In BB you could rent a bike and ride to the Matira beach, not too far and good photo opportunities

I would advise an alternate method of transport. Tahitians aren't really good drivers, there are too many animals and children on the roads, just a bad idea. You don't want to ruin your trip with an accident or hitting someones pig.

I agree with the others. If you do rent a scooter, don't do it on Tahiti or Moorea (busy roads...accident waiting to happen). And don't forget FP is so beautiful that you'll have a hard time keeping your eyes on the road for every second. A car is the way to go.

Agree with above. We do rent scooters on Huahine and have not had a problem....slower pace and fewer vehicles on the road. But we sure wouldn't do it on Moorea anymore and never have or will do it on Tahiti for the reasons stated above.......and also because island dogs get a real laugh at barking their heads off while chasing tourists on scooters. I almost had my ankle taken off on Bora...well, scared that the dogs were going to take my ankle off anyway!

As a motorcycle rider, I would recommend taking the MSF course in your area before renting scooters. You will learn invaluable information that will make you a better driver as well. They have different courses for different needs.

Taking a course is a great idea but Tahiti and Moorea riding scooters is dangerous. Heavy traffic at times,no speed limit
enforcement, concrete ditches in most places on the mountainside
of the road, dogs, very poor response time to accidents by police or medical help. Then if you didn't buy medical insurance that covers med vac one very large bill. Several years ago a lady broke her leg. She had to buy two extra seats for her one way to LAX and a roundtrip ticket plus wages for a French nurse to accompany her to LAX.

Saw a scooter accident aftermath near curve at Opunohu Bay on Mo'orea. Young lady. Had to be helicoptered to Tahiti for medical help. I'm sure it ruined her vacation.

My hubby has ridden motorcycles for over 40 years. He said that there is no way he would ride a scooter in Moorea. However, he feels that Huahine is OK for scooter rental. I don't know about now, but it seems to me that scooter rental is about the same as car rental for price.
