Guess I'll add mine to the list...also on Moorea. This past May one of the people staying at our hotel had a scooter accident. Got cut off by a car, near the bank in Maharepa...she ended up with a broken arm, and road rash on her face, arm, and leg. She had to fly the next day to Papeete for xrays, as the xray machine on Moorea wasn't working. They gave her no medication for her overnight wait. So her friend went asking around our hotel for drugs. Luckily someone had some to give her to help ease the pain. She was an experienecd rider. Had been to Moorea numerous times and had rented a scooter before.

It really can be very dangerous riding a scooter on Moorea. That's not to say you will for sure have an accident....obviously most people don't. But it's probably better to play it safe and rent a car to tour the island.

Bora Bora Cruises
TahitiTravel offers excellent deals for cruising the magnificent lagoons of French Polynesia.
We highly recommend the Bora Bora Cruises for luxurious intimacy (actually a v.good value compared to the cost of a stay at a 5 star resort) or the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Paul Gaugin for a deluxe but more traditional cruise experience.
Check our Cruises page for more information

So we go to Tahiti and swim with sharks but are afraid to rent scooters...Oh the irony! :-)

What are the stats for tourists being injured by sharks vs scooters, though. But I know what you mean, Sub.

Sub:
I was riding a BSA before you were born but it's not being afraid
it's being wise. The mechanical condition of some of the scooters
for rent isn't very good. I doubt if your jet skis
or motorcycle are nothing but in the best of mechanical condition.
I've never heard of someone dying in FP from a swim with the sharks but I personally have seen a local girl killed on a scooter.
It took over 15 minutes for medical help to arrive.
You should know there are only two fire stations on the whole island of Moorea. One in Pao Pao and one just past Tiki Village

Shark attacks per year: 2, (not mortal, either spear fishers or idiots doing stupid things during shark feeding...)
scooter accidents: 800
