Is it a slipper lobster? They are small with a flat, wide head.

Lysiosquillina maculata LOL, after november season is closed.

DJ when you were at Raimiti, did they make you taste the "kaveu"? Coconut crab?

Poehere~ I did not get to taste Coconut Crab when I was at Raimiti. I was really hoping they would have it. I don't know if they never serve it, or just didn't while we were there. I don't recall anyone mentioning it during their stay. I'm pretty sure I have heard of it being served at the Ki Ora Sauvage on Rangiroa....I know they showed it on the TV travel show that featured the Sauvage.

I'd love to try the sea urchin too. I LOVE to try new and unique foods. My husband..not so much. :-)

I am surprised there is still varos to be had. I thought they had pretty much disapeared from most islands except the more remote atolls - same with the kaveu.

Yes, they're both delicious... hence their dwindling numbers.

Ditto with Patti. Never even saw any coconut crabs. And no, no zebra shrimp(Lysiosquillina maculata)either.

DJ Squilla Mantis? Lysiosquillina maculata apparently is the new scientific name? the body looks like a sort of flat lobster... salt water species

Too bad you and Patti did not have a chance to taste the kaveu, typically for the Tuamotus, maybe even better than lobster

Yves last time i bought varo 2500 cfp/piece BB indeed not often available anymore (protected now by new marine/fishing laws), kaveu 5000 cfp/piece (Makamo) price has not changed much yam yam

Thanks Yves, that was the more specific answer I was looking for. So Aito's it is.

But now I'm wondering how my guides on the stingray feeding trip were able to handle the long spiny type of sea urchin. He just poked it with a stick to break it up, then held the spine side with his bare hand and a pufferfish would come up and nibble right off the meat end. Last time I was at CBH there were two puffer fish hanging out right off my bungalow so it would be cool to feed them urchin and get some good pics.

We had some Vana while on Vahine Island. Hea-ari the beach boy took us snorkeling and found a couple. Not a lot to taste as he said it was too early in the season.
Also ate some Kaveu at Aito's for dinner.
