Hi, we stayed at the Royal Tahitien in 2003, and loved the water-side bar/restaurant. Is there anyone who has been there recently and can confirm that it's still a nice place to go for a meal? We're going back in December and are looking for a nice, laid-back place to eat accessible from the Radisson. Thanks!

The old tahara'a is the first modern hotel built on a hillside where the elevators went down to your floor level. The hotel is now closed

Poehere, Hamara et al,
Looking for some history. My wife first visited Tahiti in 1959 as a 9-year-old. She remembers traveling to some garden hotel setting "way outside the city" for a Tamaaraa. We stayed at the Royal Tahitien once, maybe 10 years ago, and the place "felt" like it could have been the same place. The manager at the time did not know the history of the hotel.
Anybody know how long there has been a hotel on that property? If it goes back to the 1950s, any idea of the name back then?

Royal Tahitien dates back to 1968... some other "ancient" places that went broke: Princess Heiata, Tahiti Village (not to be confused with the horrible place in Las Vegas lol) and the Te Puna Bel Air (between the Beachcomber and the Sofitel) anything ring a bell?

The real question is...has the Royal Tahitian changed the drapes since 1968??? LOL! I stayed there overnight a few years ago...it was fine for one night...but man, the inside of those rooms don't look like theve been updated since the 60's or 70's.

No bell ringing. Wherever it was had to be fairly distant from the port. She mostly remembers a long ride through the dark to get there, and nothing else around the place . . . plus it was on the beach.
I kinda wonder if maybe they docked cruise ships somewhere away from the now-port of Papeete. Someplace like the old Hotel Tahiti would have fit the description, it its location was "out of town" back in '59. (Although the Hotel Tahiti did not ring bells either, when we stayed there in the 1980's)

Yeh, the rooms were a little plain when we stayed there in 2003, but the A/C worked fine, and as I said, the bar and restaurant beach-side were great. Swimming pool was quirky and kind of uninviting, as I remember. But want to try that resto again!!
