Off to Huahine next april and have heard alot from this board of pension mauarii and villas bouganvilla. Like the idea of a car and boat at your disposal, but location of mauarii looks beautiful. Would love anyone's opinion

The difference is in the location. Villas Bouganvilla is on a bay and your on a small hill. Very very nice and very friendly Mauarii is on the beach. You could alway drive to any beach or take the boat. Both are very laid back and you will get a very local feel from both.

We stay at Villas Bougainville and like it. You are across a little street from the water(not swimmable) and there is a long dock with a little palapa at the end where I like to sit. I take a lawn chair from the house and sit down there. He also has kayaks available. As it has a kitchen, you can save by cooking your own food although we never cook, just make sandwiches. We love having the boat and the car. We like to drive to our favorite snorkeling places which are over by the Relais Mahana which is right by Maurii. Having said all that, it is fabulous to be right on the beach and jump in the fabulous warm blue water. A tough decision!

Well, here is a comment to confuse you....we prefer the Fare side of Huahine. Indeed, you will have to procure some sort of transportation to get to the beach at Relais Mahana but being close to the main village and also to sunsets is wonderful for us. We discovered Rande's Shack on our most recent trip........he and his wife are wonderful. Their 2 bungalows are very comfortable and reasonably priced and the water off their property is very clear.

Yep, you are right Vaitape, I had read about Rande's, now I do have to decide. I guess I have time. With this economy we are all crazy to be thinking of a trip like this anyway!! The poor Tahitiens must not be seeing many tourists. Thanks again

We stayed at Rande's Shack a year ago and loved it (and it's inexpensive!). You can walk or bike (free) into Fare and that was a big draw, plus the snorkelling there is very good (you can do a mini-drift snorkel right there...the current is mild, but pulls you along as you look at the fish & coral). Plus, Rande's American (married to an FP wife who we didn't get a chance to meet) and he's friendly & helpful. Also, you have the use of your own washer (free again)...a real bonus if you're on a long trip. We scheduled Huahine for the middle of our almost-3-week trip so we could do our laundry there.

I stayed at Villa Bougainville Sept 08 and it was fabulous. You can see our photos here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/cflament/TahitiSept08Huahine?feat=directlink
Here is a link to the villa on Google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&sll=-23.38253,-149.476501&sspn=7.508549,10.217285&ie=UTF8&ll=-16.746662,-151.003835&spn=0.003827,0.004989&t=h&z=18
We stayed for 4 days during our very first trip to FP. I got a lot from this forum and it is time for me to give a feedback.
We choose Villa Bougeainville because of good reviews here in this forum and that was perfect. Raphael, the owner, is a very affable and knowledgeable person. We got the newest villa right on the bay. Was a little more pricey but was bigger and we were just in front of the bay. It is also isolated. Not that the other villas are bad. But that one cannot be beaten.
The ++++ of the rental at Villa Bougeainville is that you get house+car+boat ... that's a fantastic deal. Knowing how expensive is FP that make the vacation more affordable.
Having a car is also a must in Huahine and make sense. Roads are perfect, just got new asphalt. Very little traffic.
Location of the villas is perfectly positioned in the middle of the island. Its 20 to 30 min to the main village of Fare. We went there every day. Usually came back to the house after sunset seen in Fare - the most impressive sunset you will ever see. You can take you car and go north, south and do all your expeditions in 1/2 day, a full day, repeat the next day, all what you want. And since the island is small very little gas consumption. The south east coast is gorgeous. The ride is so tranquil and views are *****.
The boat that comes with the villa is very fun and allows you to see the island from the shore like no one else sees it. We end up doing 2 trips and on the second one went to a small beach totally deserted. We were alone. But in the back there was some remaining of a building with a sign "Propriete Prive". We found out latter that it used to be a big expensive resort 10 years ago and that Diana Ross did her 50th anniversary birthday there. Before it used to belong to Julio Iglesias ! We just found that beach by chance. Again the boat that came with the house was the opportunity to visit and explore. Very easy to navigate. Raphael provide help, maps.
The island is small and very laid back. Raphael was very helpful from day one and went more that it should have done. He gave us advices on where to go, went with us on a boat excursion once. He lives just behind. I learned that the other villas that are rented next to his are from a relative. But I would definitely go with Raphael and Villa Bougainville. That's coming from a New Yorker that knew nothing about FP six months ago and loved Huahine.
On a side note ... I would like to say that after Huahine we went to Bora Bora at the IC Thalaso and we much prefer what we got from Huahine. BB is beautiful - at least from the IC - but too expensive and too touristy. And also mostly newly wed couples. A very special atmosphere. I will not rent a car and go around BB after having done it in Huahine.
Shopping at the super market in Fare lower the cost but the prices are those of a NYC corner deli.
Forgot to say that the house comes with all amenities ... including satellite TV - never switched on - laundry machine, cooking stuff, etc.
One of our good memories is the last morning, coffee cups in hand, going bare foot to the bus stop by the house where mothers were dropping the kids for the school bus and having a chat with then. You learn so much. So simple also.
We are hoping that ATN eventually resume the NYC-Papeete flights to go next year should they have promotion on price. And probably will include an other few days in Huahine at the Villas Bougainville because that the best option.
