We love pensions, too, and try to plan all of our trips the same way (not just French Polynesian ones). We just got back from Quebec City (stayed in a hotel because of hubby's convention) and then an hour east of Quebec City in gorgeous countryside. We rented a chalet (not quite a pension, but still not a traditional hotel) and had a fantastic week. The pensions in FP are often like mini-resorts. Pension Motu Iti (on Moorea) reminded us of bigger resorts, but one where you get to know your hosts, wait staff, and guests). It's so much more personal and, on top of that, way cheaper!
Thanks for all the info you provided. I think one of the successes of this forum is the updated info. Those of us who've been can share our experiences, but if you haven't been somewhere in years, the info might not be up-to-date and having new reports really helps with that, not to mention, people trying out new resorts & pensions or trying new activities.

Absolutely, vaitape. I haven't been everywhere in Canada, but I can help with places I've been to (Vancouver, the Rockies, Calgary, a large part of Ontario, parts of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island--including a 2-bedroom cottage we rented for 3 nights for $99...total, not per night!)

Many thanks wannago for the detailed report and the amazing photos! The one that shows the wrasse, the eel and shark altogether took me aback. Wow! The beach and pension at Tikehau look lovely and your shots and words about Raimiti have convinced me that I need to visit.

vaitape, the pm function doesn't work here. Email me at lingfing at gmail dot com. Let me know what part of Canada you're planning to visit and what time of year, if you know. And, yes, Anne of Green Gables is in PEI and a nice place to visit.

Vaitape-haven't been that many places in Canada, but we are close to the border (150 or so miles). We took the circle tour by motorcycle around Lake Superior one year. For a ways past Thunder Bay, going east was not that exciting. It got more beautiful as we went along, and in what I think was Old Woman park, they let you walk out on a ledge where there were some petroglyphs. At the time, I was amazed and mentioned it, that they would allow people to touch them. I don't know if that is allowed anymore. We took a swing down to Mackinac Island which is worth it, I feel. I love the Mackinac Bridge. Going west from Thunder Bay is not worth it, in my opinion.(We did that on another trip) Nothing sticks in my mind. We went as far as Kenora. Quebec City is fabulous. My husband used to want to see the polar bears, but he has since changed his mind. He never wants to see snow again. Living by the big pond-Lake Superior and being able to see it every day , although beautiful, just doesn't do it for me now that I've seen FP. Ruined for life! I think Lake Michigan is more beautiful than Superior because the water color is generally more blue. I'm so sick of preparing all year to survive winter, and then surviving winter which is fast approaching, although it was 69 degrees on Thursday. Lake Louise is worth it also. I liked Toronto many, many years ago, but I'm not sure that it has maintained it's beautiful condition over the years. Niagara Falls didn't do it for me either.
