Ia orana to all,
Counting the weeks to my trip in May...It will be a long winter!

I remember reading somewhere that it's possible to bring some supplies to Raimiti (i.e. alcohol, snackies and such). Is it possible to buy some supplies on Fakarava upon arrival?(is there time to do this or is the boat leaving immediately?) I'll be staying on Rangiroa first and flying directly from Rangiroa to Fakarava. Better to buy in Papeete before departure?

How much cash is a reasonable amount to have on-hand on Rangiroa/Fakarava? I know that access to cash is rather limited if not non-existant. I don't want to carry to much, but I don't want to wish I had more (I'm thinking I might see something in the village I desperatly want!)

Anyone heading there in May?

Merci!

Hi Andie. We will be at Raimiti May 7th through the 13th. When will you be there?

Hey Carrieq, we'll be crossing path very quickly! We're arriving on the 12th! Are you going somewhere else after Raimiti?

We took liquor (for me...hubby bought cold Hinanos from Raimiti each day & I bought juice that I used to mix drinks), but that was all (we ate so well at Raimiti that we never needed a snack). You land at the airport & they take you by vehicle to the boat. I didn't see anywhere you could buy stuff, other than the 'restaurant' at the airport (fresh food). Maybe others have asked them to stop at a magasin, though (we had no need so didn't ask). The vehicle left as soon as they gathered everyone up (we were the only ones going to Raimiti, but the driver picked several people up & dropped them at various destinations on the way to the boat). They hire the driver so she isn't Raimiti staff.

As for cash, that was tricky for us, too, as it was our last stop in FP & we didn't want to have too much cash left over at the end. I think we spent about 6000 XPF total on daily Hinanos & juice (certainly under 10000), but I'm sure you could spend way more, especially if you wanted wine with dinner. I don't know how much money you'd want on Rangiroa (I'm assuming that's the village you're mentioning as there wasn't anything other than non-breakfast juice & alcohol for us to spend money on at Raimiti). If you're going to another island after these 2 (or if you're staying somewhere on Rangiroa where you can pay down your final bill with cash), why not just bring lots with you?

Hello OW, Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure if there was a "pit stop" at the village before the boat departure. Sounds like I'll have to get it in Papeete before we go. Is the village worth visiting or is there really nothing to see (or buy, i.e. I like to pick up something from every place I go).

All I saw in the area near the airport is houses. There might have been a magasin, but I can't really remember. The boat picks you up beside a restaurant, too. There's another mini-village at the south pass that Raimiti takes you too, but, again, I didn't see anywhere to buy anything (though they must buy their groceries somewhere). Why not bring back something like a seashell (dead on the beach) instead? Actually, we were given shell necklaces at Raimiti & you could keep them.

We stopped at a small magasin on our way to the boat, but there was almost nothing on the shelves, just stuff like cereal and dog food (!). May have been the day before the supply boat's arrival?

Don't recall any magasin of any kind along the road to the boat dock from the airport. The little store in the airport was snacks and soda, beer only. Maybe if you asked the driver...? It's a pretty short drive and before you know it you are on the boat. Ours was uncovered, and I wished I'd kept the sunscreen a little more handy. I should have carried in my backpack/carryon. Instead I had to rummage through the suitcase while we were underway to find it.

At Raimiti, they take credit cards to settle your bill before leaving. I understand that is a relatively new development. We had a few cokes and rum drinks all four nights and our final bill was about $100. I put it on my card. Just checked and the exchange was about 94. Whoopee!

You are right up above, we never felt the need for snacks.

Good info, folks. Thanks again. That means I don't have to stress about shopping! Woohoo!

Wannago, that's great that they take credit cards there now. It was a bit stressful to make sure we had cash (but not to much since Raimiti was our last stop in FP).
