I know, we went the first time in 2000, to the old Bali Hai Hotel, right before they tore it down and we paid little over $1000 for a week.

We've had many meals at Chez Tara's. The food is excellent and a truly beautiful location. The Sunday meal is all you can eat, but it starts at a certain time and is done at a certain time - something like 11-2 PM, but I don't think it's the correct times. Just an idea of kind of the times. I can never figure out when they are open either. I always forget to look at the times. We love eating on the beach for lunch at the Relais. There appears to be some kind of store practically next to Chez Tara's as well(to the left when you are facing it standing on the beach). Have not checked that one out although we go to the beach there quite often. Great beach area by the Relais and Chez Tara's. Goes on for a long ways.

sevenseas44: We stayed at the Cook's Bay hotel then too...what a deal, eh? Should have gone more often.....never mind!
Please let us know about your sail. We saw her leaving from Raiatea to go to Huahine in June.....omigod the wind was doing 40 knots outside the pass. Would have made for an interesting sail for sure!

Holte: I've heard nothing but good things about Chez Tara and the other couple of restuarants on this end of the island. I looked at some of the menus online and comments made by patrons. The worst I've heard or read is some fairly high prices ($25 for a plate of spaghetti). At least the exchange rate has been moving in the right direction. We'll be sure to look into the store next to Chez Tara's. Thanks for the info.

Vaitape: Oh boy! 40 knots you say? Wow! We'd be flying! I will tell all (well, most all...) when we get back.

svenseas44: yeah, it was a remarkably cool, windy time in FP during June and July. We met a women Star Flyer passenger from San Diego on the dock in Raiatea. She was on the 11 day sail that also went to the Tuamotus.....they had very little sun but she said they loved the ship, the crew, and the food and the activities.
Expect 1800-2200 xpf for pasta. Noodles at a Snack that serves chinese food could be had for around 800-1200 xpf in Papeete and Raiatea. If/when you rent a car or scooter on Huahine, be sure to visit the Coral Gardens just off the old Sofitel for great snorkeling. AND for THE BEST Poisson Cru in all of FP (in our humble opinion), try the Snack Temarara in Fare....excellent! and

meant to add "excellent and reasonably priced for a large serving" plus their Hinanos are good and cold. When is it that you are going?

We are on the Star Flyer for 11 days starting 2/15/09 and then will go back to Huahine for a week at the RM in a beach bungalow. This trip is still way too far off. I wanna go now! I suppose we could have gone sooner but this was the first 11-dayer of 2009.

We also considered going on the Aranui III but their first trip is also not until Feb and it is a shortened version. We went on the Aranui II in May of 1998 and the experience was almost mystical. We still get together with people we met on that trip. We kind of worry that a repeat might not work out the same way. After all, it's a different ship and much more oriented toward passengers (strange complaint but true). Yet again, Vie and Sylvie are still running the tours and I think the Aranui still has the same bartender. Couldn't go too far wrong!

Well, seems that from now til the first of the year, time flies. Then in January you will be gathering things together (remember to pack heaps of sunblock which is outrageously expensive in FP and insect repellent with at least 25% DEET!), and making house and pet sitting/bill paying arrangements while you'll be gone...and before you know it, you'll be on your merry way!!!

Are you planning on a few days in FP before you set sail?

Actually, we go from the plane to the boat. Star Clippers makes things a bit difficult by charging "deviation fees" and dropping transfers if you do anything differently. We are spending a nite in LA (goody, goody) mainly because we fly out of Sacramento (one of the fog bank capitals of the world in Feb). We didn't want to take any chances on missing the plane and then boat and then ....

We could have made our own airline arrangements with ATN thereby avoiding these fees but the costs were still significantly cheaper thru Star Clippers. There are getting to be so few flights to FP anymore from LA (really just Air France and ATN). Competition used to keep the costs down. Even last year flights could be found for around $800 rt. We did make flight arrangements and our hotel through Tahiti Nui Travel for Huahine (I tried to make our hotel reservations directly with the Relais Mahana but couldn't get them to respond to my email - ah, island life). I know: gripe, whine and complain about how good things used to be the good ol' days-- but they were!

Seems most cruise ship companies charge deviation fees and exclude transfers if you do deviate. We saved so much on airfare by booking air through the cruise ship company, we decided to deviate and go in a few days early. But we REALLY saved on air!

Have a wonderful trip and keep asking questions! So glad that you are returning to FP...and to Huahine....it is our most special place.....sigh! and yes, things seemed easier/cheaper in the good old days!
