Thank you to everyone for all the incredibly helpful info on this site's forum! Coming to FP on a quick stop over giving only two full days for diving. I'd be grateful if you'd please help me decide if I should spend the time in Moorea or Bora Bora. As you may know, the flight is around $500USD to Bora Bora from Papette. I have been to both islands before and my primary interest in Bora Bora are the manta rays which I have read that they have fled the lagoon three years ago. Should I save money and shark dive in Moorea these two days? Or slurge to Bora Bora knowing my heart would be broken by no manta rays?
Lastly, I'm interested in taking an advanced open water course. Any recommendations for an instructional diveshop on either island?
MANY THANKS in advance for your help with this decision. Annasharkdiver.

With only 2 days, you will spend all your time geting to and from Bora.
Save the time and money, dive Moorea. Every shop does both morning and afternoon dives, and all have good instructors. Check their websites, see what certs they offer, pre-book and be ready to go when you get there. May be easiest to dive with whoever is closest to your lodgings.

Pohere, I heard it from the tour operators in December 2007. Either they came back, or thaer's quite a lag time between counting and publishing.

Thanks STM for your solid advice! I agree with you. Poehere- I have heard from two dive shops in Bora Bora that seeing the manta rays is uncertain because they fled three years ago due to the contruction of the new Four Seasons near the lagoon. As watching them is a magical experience for me, I will wait for a hopeful return before returning to the island. Thank you again!

Oh, don't forget to calculate in your return flight times. You may or may not be able to do a dive on your last afternoon!

In 2000, there were schooling Mantas opposite Le Meridien. The dive site is called Anau. It was removed from the dive operator's websites a few years ago because of the construction of Thalasso, St Regis and Four Seasons, but is now back on their websites, presumably because the Mantas left the area. I did not dive in Bora Bora in November 2007 (but did dive in Moorea), but the operators said that the Mantas were back, probably because of St Regis and Thalasso pumping water, nutrients and plankton from outside the reef back into the lagoon. So next November (2009) I'll be diving there again for sure if the Mantas are back! Going to Rangi after Bora Bora so I'll only dive Bora Bora if I can see Mantas or dive Muri Muri. Here is a link to my Moorea underwater photos from November 2007.

Disappointing to see so many crown of thorns.
