I still say that you really lucked out, Sub! The 48-hour health certificate requirement is FP's, not the USA's, which only requires 10 to 14 days before, depending which state you enter on your international flight. You did not have to go to the 24-hour prior-to-flight FP government inspection at F'aaa, either, because the people at HA when you checked in didn't seem to know about it, had never done it! We had to appear at the cargo/customs office at 9 a.m. the day before a 2:10 a.m. flight, with dog, paperwork, and crate, for an inspection. VERY inconvenient and grueling!

Also, animals transiting througn Hawaii are eligible for a 5-day-or-less direct release program, which your cat would have qualified for (with an awful lot of paperwork), BUT again, the people at Hawaiian checkin in Papeete didn't seem to know about the requirements, and luckily let you and the the kitty on the plane without the paperwork! We had considered bringing Tekila home on Hawaiian in August, but the requirements were just too bizarre, and the threat of quarantine so great that we didn't want to risk it.

Also, there is a new (2007) requirement in FP that EXPORTED cats and dogs have a rabies vaccination 21 days prior to the flight, when they are going to a country that has rabies. Now, technically, the USA does not require a rabies vaccine for an IMPORTED animal that comes from a rabies-free country (which FP is), but if you get a fussy customs official in LAX, you'd better have a rabies certificate dated 31 days prior (the USA requires 31 days, FP requires 21 days). Our vet was kind enough to backdate the rabies certificate, because it's a stupid requirement in a rabies-free country! Oh, yes, and there is also now an FP requirement that the animal have an electronic microchip ID, which costs another $60 on top of the vet bill. Because you didn't have to go through the red tape at the Papeete end, you missed all this good stuff! You were very, very lucky!

When we arrived at LAX with the dog, we had to find the cargo facility (a mile from the airport), sit there and wait until the health department faxed back to the cargo people an okay after inspection of our paperwork, and then run over to customs to stand on a line and wait for a stamp of approval. It took 3 hours to retrieve the dog, and added to the 4 hours prior to the flight they made us check her in at Papeete, she was 15 hours total in the kennel. The shipping cost on ATN was $1500 (for 32 kilos, dog and cage), more than my round-trip airfare!

You had a lot of people on Moorea sending you good vibrations, Sub, and we are all so glad it worked out! I wouldn't recommend, though, to anyone else that it would be so easy next time for someone else to try it the same way Sub did!

Yeah it's a girl.

That 5 day direct release also has to do with animals staying in Hawaii, not transitting through. Apparently they have relaxed some of their requirements a bit and that program is part of it. Still, it would be problematic if you are moving to, or living in, Hawaii and wanted to bring your pet.

Barb it's weird that you had to pay $1500 when all I could see was an $80 charge and a $110 charge on that link. Where is the microchip requirement? That was on Hawaii's DOA form, but again, for animals staying in Hawaii.

The facility in Hawaii was actually right below gates 26 and up where we deplaned from PHX and boarded for PPT on the way there. The walk wasn't bad once we got through the customs maze and we never had to do anything with out kitten regarding customs.

Either way, I'm not doing this again!

Sub, The microchip requirement is the FP government's. We were told about it by the person we were contacted by from the cargo facility for ATN -- they won't ship a pet without an electronic microchip or an ear tattoo anymore because of the new law.

The $1500 was based on weight, I think. The dog + crate were 32 kilos (about 70 pounds). That's a lot more shipping weight than your tiny kitten and small kennel!

Good for both of us! We did it successfully! (And I won't be doing it again either...)

Do tell about your kitten adventure! She is SUPER cute!!! I'd love to have a meowing part of Tahiti. (I love the kitties...) I personally believe that my 22 year old manx was reincarnated on Bora Bora as the resident cat at Le Meridien (the pure white one if anyone has seen it lately) It walked right up to me and headbutted me. The staff was amazed that that the cat let me pick it up. Said they'd never seen the cat let someone do that.
