Jan Prince's book "Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide" covers absolutely everything, from costs of accommodation to food and guided tours and car hire. Well worth the investment, especially if you are an FP virgin.

Hi to HOLTE saw your post and it mentioned camping on Moorea and other islands...I am traveling to FP and hoping to stay the entire time allowed...(two months from US?) Wish I had a travel companion, but I will be going it alone it appears...relatively safe there and camping is good? (mid-age female) Do i need to request a reservation (if so...how?) or just show up? Thanks so much!

I only know about camping on Huahine. There are three places-two on Huahine Nui which are closer to a large grocery store, but not on a good swimming beach because the reef is so close to shore ,and one that is on Huahine Iti which is on a beautiful beach, but far from stores, except for some little convenience type stores. You can only stay for thirty days without a visa. Huahine Camping is on Huahine Iti and perhaps if you look on the net you can find some pictures of it. There are showers and cooking facilities. There are 6 beach cabins and a camping area for tents. He has airport transfers for a fee. There is camping Vana'a with no website and Vaihonu- www.iaorana-huahine.com. Camping is very safe and you are right on the water.I don't think that you would need a reservation, but it depends on when you are going. If you are going at Christmas or in the fall when there is the big canoe race, it might be filled.

Terriewton,
If you are a U.S. citizen, you are allowed only a 30-day stay unless you obtain a visa for a longer stay from the French Consulate.
On Moorea, there is camping at Nelson Camping and Moorea Camping, both within walking distance to groceries and shops.
Website for Nelson Camping: http://www.camping-nelson.pf/English/monsiteweb/index.htm
Here is a link to review about Moorea Camping from a hostel site: http://www.bugpacific.com/reviews/French_Polynesia/Moorea/pf007/index.htm
I would make a reservations before going.
