We will be flying in on May 8 to Papeete Airport at 6:30 p.m.. Instead of paying hundreds of $ at a hotel just to lay our head down and get up early the next day to catch a flight to our first island like we did on our first trip to Tahiti, we have decided to stay right at the airport at Papeete. Can someone tell us what is at this airport and what kind of arrangements there is for lounging overnight? Is there someplace safe to put all our luggage if we want to go around the island for a few hours? Any info on the accomodations at this airport would be great. Thank you.

There is nowhere to sleep at the airport proper. Unless you want to take an air matress and sleep in the terminal. There is the Tahiti Airport motel dircetly across the street. It was about $167.00 USD when we stayed there in November. Clean and quiet. Just a place to sleep for the night. No restaurant or anything.

DenverJoe's right about the airport. We tried sleeping there one night and the chairs are very uncomfortable & I wouldn't sleep on the floor (we saw palmetto bugs aka cockroaches there). We stayed at the Tahiti Airport motel last time (it's a bit of a hike up the hill, but the motel's clean). There are also a couple of pensions who will pick you up that are reasonably priced (I don't have the names handy, but a search here should turn them up). There is luggage storage in the parking lot of the airport if you need to use it.

FP Couple,
If Moorea is your first island after you arrive in Papeete, your 6:30 p.m. flight is early enough to connect with an Air Moorea night flight and arrive at your destination the same night. That would be MUCH more comfortable than sleeping in the airport!
Check the flight schedules at www.airmoorea.com.
If you do decide to sleep at the airport, check out this website: http://www.sleepinginairports.net/search.asp?SearchTerm=Papeete&action=Review+Search
Also, you might consider bringing an inflatable raft (cheap, find them at the dollar store), blow it up, and sleep on it. The best place to plant yourself would be over by the Air Tahiti domestic check-in (turn RIGHT and go past the snack bar as you exit immigration), because it is quiet there all night and there is a bathroom nearby.
There is a wooden ledge, behind the snack bar and opposite the bathrooms, and I have seen people spread out there to snooze for awhile. Last trip, someone had even set up a pretty nice BED there (see photo below)!

being a low budget traveler and a habitual Huahineite. the late arrival of ATN and the early flight to huahine, I have spent many a night on the benches and floor at Faaa. It makes the bed pad in the hostels feel luxurious

My husband and I spent the night in the Papeete airport this October. Just being able to lay down was a treat after the 12 plus hour flight. There were a number of other people doing the same as us. I had "borrowed" the pillow and blanket from the Air Tahiti Nui flight so I had a little bit of comfort. If we were to return to Tahiti and arrive around midnight with another early departure to Moorea, I would stay in the airport again. The thought of getting to a hotel, checking in, getting maybe a couple hours of sleep, checking out of the hotel, getting back to the airport seemed like too much effort after such a long flight.

I usually stay at chez guynette. the owners (marty & moe) have sold it to a french couple. I understand their hours are not regular anymore. their website is down. It is an ideal place for single people to stay. close to the supermarch and town, good restaurants etc. marty may have a house to rent.Inese Holte on this board can give you more info on Huahine. don't tell anyone about it though we want to keep it a secret.....

OK Tom, giving away the secrets!! We stay at the Villas Bougainville-you get a house with a car and a boat. Although the Villas are right across the street from the water, it is not swimming water. But we love the car and the boat option. Relais Mahana is really nice on the best beach. There is Rande's shack which Old Wife loves. There are also the ToeToe places of which I cannot remember the names. The one in Parea is on beautiful water and they are very inexpensive. I can't remember the spelling, but the pension society in Polynesia is something like Haere and they have a lot of the pensions listed but not all have pics. Te Tiare of course is lovely. If you have any particular ones you're interested in, let us know. I am leaving for Huahine on December 20!!!!!!!Yippee!!!!!!
