Does anyone know the status of the renovations on Rangiroa's Kia Ora Village? I'm posting this on the misc. questions forum too (sorry for the double post).

There was a posting not so long ago, can't remember if it was on this forum or on TripAdvisor. Apparently, the renovations have been postponed for a while. It was supposed to start early this year or early Spring (March??). I got a great deal for my stay in May because of that and it looks like it won't be underway by then.

I'll start looking on TripAdvisor for updates, too. Thanks for the tip. I'm glad you got a great deal! May is just around the corner.

I e-mailed the hotel and this is what I got back:
"At this moment we cannot confirm any reservations after June 1st 2009 since this is when we expect to start our renovation project.
We are still waiting for a definite answer from the government but it is most probable that we can go ahead as planned.
We prefer not to confirm any reservations after this date and having to cancel them afterwards. We are sorry not to be able to give you more precise information."
Hope this helps.

We also emailed the hotel a couple of weeks back and got the same response. I have since been in touch with our local TA and she just replied to me today saying renovations are being postponed until 2010!!!

They don't have building permit yet for their renovations. An offical publication to obtain a permit was posted only early this week and it will take a long time for such procedures to get the "green light". In view of the actual tourist situation however with hotels closing all over the place I can image they're not willing to invest at this time at all.

Thanks for the info everyone. Very useful. I'll keep checking in case there is a change.
Personally, I think the hotel is good as-is for a little while longer. It's worn a bit around the edges, the basics are all in good working order. As long as they maintain what they have carefully, they'll survive the downturn without losing any stars off their rating.

We have just been advised by our local TA that the Kia Ora is now going to be undergoing renovations for 2010 and they are not taking bookings at this stage for 2010 :(

Hi Friends... here is what the GM sent re the renovations:
Many of you are asking about our renovation project. Well, we still expect to go ahead with it in January. We are still waiting for the government to give us their OK on the de-tax. The good news is that they are studying our requests now which means that everything should be fine for January. If it is confirmed, the hotel will close and since the project will take just over a year to complete, we will not be able to take any reservations as of mid-January until the end of 2010.
I will keep you posted as soon as I receive more information.
Just to remind you of what we will be doing, here it is:
a) The Overwater Bungalows will be totally redone. They will be more spacious and more luxurious.
b) All of our Garden Bungalows and Garden Suite Bungalows will be destroyed. They will be turned into small villas each having a private swimming pool. These bungalows will be much nicer and more expensive than our current Beach Bungalows. There will be one bedroom and two bedroom bungalows to accommodate families.
c) An Overwater Presidential Suite will be built on the far west end of the property. It will have an overwater swimming pool and an adjacent junior suite. The entrance to the overwater dock leading to the suite will be private and there will be a small video games room at the entrance which can also be used as a private business center.
d) The Overwater Bar will be destroyed and rebuilt.
e) The Kitchen will be destroyed and rebuilt.
f) Our present "Fare Massage" will be turned into a Specialty Restaurant.
g) Our tennis courts will be removed since very few guests use them and in the same area, we will construct our new Spa with Massage Parlors and a Gym.
h) The Blue Dolphins Diving Center will be destroyed and a much larger one will be built.
i) The Swimming Pool will be retiled.
j) The Kia Ora Sauvage will also be renovated.
