It looks like the Club Med BB is closing. People have been talking about it on the tripadvisor forums. very disappointing because i was counting on staying there for my return trip.

I think the "official" word is that they are closing from Feb. 1 to May 1 for renovations, but the fact that they are not taking reservations beyond that is not a good sign... When Club Med Moorea closed for renovations, they never reopened. Maybe Poehere has more information?

Nobody counts on them reopening again and the unions are really pi*** off as they're sending all the popa'a GO's to other CM locations and local staff home with 3 months pay check! Air Tahiti has cancelled 10 of their weekly BB flights so yes, the situation is pretty dramatic.

I'm afraid it's only going to get worse before it starts improving. I'm no economist, but I don't see any signs of recovery any time soon. My personal feeling is our economy is going to be in toilet for at least another year, possibly 2, and heaven forbid...maybe longer. And, once things do start to recover here and abroad, a trip to FP is NOT going to be the first thing on most peoples mind. I really do believe travel recovery is going to lag at least another 6-12 months behind the overall economic recovery. It's going to be a long, very painful few years.

I think you are dead right Patti. Some resort locations can try and mitigate the effects of a recession by cutting prices and offering deals, but given FP's extremely high cost structure it will be very hard for them to compete for the (more) frugal traveller

This is from USA Today and it doesn't bode well for tourism anywhere:
The U.S. economy will climb out of recession in the second half of the year, but firms will continue to cut jobs through 2009 and growth will likely be more of a crawl than a sprint, according to USA TODAY's latest survey of economists. The unemployment rate is expected to peak at 8.8% early next year, according to the median answer of 52 economists surveyed by USA TODAY Jan. 15-22. That is up from the 7.2% jobless rate seen in December and would be the highest since 1983. The jobless rate often continues to rise following a recession as employers remain cautious and implement earlier, announced cuts.
Economic improvement doesn't mean smooth sailing. The majority of the economists said the economy wouldn't return to a healthy, sustainable growth rate until 2011 or later. And 42%, a plurality, said the recession will turn out to be the worst in postwar history.
Standard & Poor's chief economist David Wyss says that for many people, the economy won't feel good for some time: "The key number for people is probably the unemployment rate. Until you see that turn around … I think people will feel this is a recession, regardless of what the economists say."

I don't know about the rest of the world, but running away to FP seems more and more like a good idea. The only problem is paying for it. I'm sure the resorts are suffering. If I had money, I'd be doing my part and keeping the FP economy moving!

the problem with running away to FP is you won't want to leave.
