We just had word from Club Med Australia (local one for us) that Club Med BB is going to re-open in May 2009 - I guess we'll see what happens!!!

I am maybe too optimist but my experience is that if people cannot afford a house or a new car any longer, they start saving so much that when the economy starts again, they spend like crazy what they saved. Not everyone in the world has been sacked.
I am pretty sure that visitors will come back soon. Just a matter of being patient for a couple of years.

That is weird G&C, as unfortunately an official announcement by the CM head office was made 2 days ago, they will definitely not re-open on BB

So there's zero chance the wil re-open ever again? Pretty much like CM Moorea?
That's too bad. I don't have a real big problem with these properties closing their doors for good if that's what they need to do...but it's sad to see the properties just sit there unused for so many years. If they aren't going to return, there should be some way of tearing down the structures and letting the land return to it's natural state. It's such a eyesore to see the fenced off shuttered properties. Sadly there are many on all of the islands.

Patti, It's a sad fact that the owners of the land (local families) sometimes do not have the funds to tear down the improvements on the land, and believe for awhile that someone else will come in and lease it "as is."
It's too bad that CM BB will go the way of CM Moorea...

I know Barbi. I was actually referring to the Gov't coming in and tearing them down for them. Not like THAT is likely to happen. :-(
It's just so sad to drive by these properties and see them all fenced off and shuttered up. It would add so much more to the area aesthetically if they would just tear them down and let them return to nature.
I can only assume, sooner or later, some big development company will come in and demo and rebuild on the property. But how far into the future is that? 10 years? 20 years? Never?

I imagine no one has any money, but it would be good if they could auction them off so people could bid on parts of them. Then at least the materials could be reused. But if the owners feel that the property will be bought as is, they probably don't want to see the buildings torn down. I hate to see all of those materials just going to waste.

Holte, that's what they did on Moorea; local people bought some of the actual huts, dismantled them, and carried them off to their own properties. But that didn't happen until many years after they had closed, and it's still an eyesore, though...
