We'll go to French Polynesia for 1 week this october (it's a part of a 4-week-trip to Tokio, Auckland, Cook Islands and Sydney).
We are not sure I've we should go just to Bora Bora for 7 nights or to Moorea for 3 and to Bora Bora for 4 nights? We are affraid that it is to much to go to both islands because maybe it's to stressfull so much flights in so short time - so we think it could be better to make just one island and relax.
In Bora Bora we think about to stay at LE MOANA. It seems to us that it has a good value for money.
What do you think about our plans? Could you recommend LE MOANA? Or would you recommend an other/better resort with an equal price level? Do you know which Over-Water-Bungalow/Over-Water-Horizon-Bungalow # has the best views in LE MOANA?
Thanks for your answer.
Christian, Berlin.

We went to Bora Bora for 5 nights and found that was way too long. So I would suggest either Bora Bora for 4 nights and Moorea for 3 or (what I would choose is) Moorea for 4 nights (because there's more to do) and Bora Bora for 3. I would never spend just 2 nights on an island and I think at least 4 is best, but I'd make an exception for Bora Bora.
I haven't stayed at Le Moana so I can't recommend an Overwater Bungalow (we stayed at the Sofitel Motu and loved that resort).

Well here we go again. The first timer to FP is getting an answer that 5 days in Bora Bora is way too long! And you wonder why there is so little traffic here at the forum. I hope you will not take that advice!
I'm seeing your itinerary and I believe you should stick to Bora Bora. You are going to Rarotonga which is a bit like Moorea. But there is nothing like Bora Bora. And I believe your choice of Le Moana is good. It's not the newest hotel on the island, but staying there is like having two hotels to play with - you can spend a day at Thalasso for free. Thalasso is larger, is located on the small motu (island) rather than the main island like Le Moana, the pool is larger and is much more quiet. I know it's a bigger hotel than Le Moana, but Le Moana is right on the main public beach of Bora Bora and you see a lot of people around. Thalasso usually seems like it's only a few couples.
I would advice you to pay for Ambassador membership at the IC hotels. Book the cheapest OWB and you will be upgraded to a better one. You will also get one free night.
If this is your first time in New Zealand, try to leave Auckland as soon as you can and travel to the South Island. MAybe fly to Christchurch, rent a car and drive to Queenstown and back.
Good luck on your trip!

Well, that was my honest opinion. I'm not fond of Bora Bora but I love Moorea, Huahine, and Fakarava. I wouldn't discourage anyone from going to FP, but I personally found 5 nights in Bora Bora too long (especially considering how expensive it is compared to some other islands).

I agree with Old Wife. It depends on what you are looking for on a trip. Some people need luxury or uber luxury and would never be happy unless that is the way it is. My hubby could stay in any accommodations anywhere in the world-the grimmest would not concern him. I can't stand luxury accommodations. I like to experience the culture, but I can't do grim or even a little grim. Everyone knows for their own self what they want, although I had no idea that I didn't want resorts until the resort we planned on staying in FP went out of business. We discovered pensions, and I can never go the resort route, unless perhaps I win a contest and that would be the only option. Our experiences in pensions have been so wonderful, something we would have never been able to experience staying in a resort. Although I have to say the the Te Tiare in Huahine is different because that resort is a labor of love for the owners.

I'd have to agree with Snowboarder, but everyone is different. The first time we went to BB (my second visit to FP) we stayed for 14 nights and that wasn't long enough for me! I love the water, so no amount of time in the most beautiful lagoon on the planet is too long. We could have easily stayed for another week or two. I'd go the 5 nights at BB, especially considering your world itinerary. You may need time to relax. We haven't stayed at Moana, but we've been through there (we stayed at Thalasso). What really impressed me was the colours in the lagoon where Moana is - absolutely stunning! You're spot on with the Moorea Cook Islands description too, Snowboarder. I've been to both. Very similar. And the Ambassador card is a definite as well.

Obviously, there is a huge difference of opinion on Bora Bora. While I can see frustration from those who have presumably seen rapid development, the natural beauty of the lagoon should not, IMHO, be missed. We stayed 5 days and wanted more. It also seems that many complain about the high cost, then in the next breath recommend the $2k+ a night resorts. There are lower cost options. We stayed at the Sofitel Motu and loved it. Quiet, isolated, but fairly convenient to connect to the main island. Nor cheap to be sure. But I do find it difficult to see someone recommend against seeing what I consider one of the most beautiful places on earth. Let them see it at least once -- then they can make up their own minds.

If it's at all possible I do believe everyone should see Bora Bora at least once in their life time. It truly is one of the most beautiful places on earth. But is also one of the most expensive places on earth. I am glad I went and experienced it....but once was enough for me. Been there, done that. It was absolutely stunning...but there was not enough to beckon me to return.
I would never recommend someone not go see it....UNLESS....their budget prevented it. If they are on a very limited budget, then there are other islands in FP to go visit that will cost much less than Bora Bora. It is possible to visit one of the other islands and have an absolutely spectacular time. For some, the expense of Bora Bora is quite simply just too high...and if one of the other islands more comfortably fits their budget, then they go for what they can afford to do without having to feel as though they are settling for second best. The other islands are also very worthy of a visit...with or without a visit to Bora Bora.

One can stay in a pension on Bora Bora if the wish is to see it and the budget screams, "no". I agree that Bora Bora needs to be seen as it is the dream. It seems that a lot of people only go to FP once, so to miss Bora Bora ,if you have the time, would be a shame because it is so beautiful. But as Patti says, the other islands are breathtakingly beautiful as well. I think a Bora Bora, Moorea split is always good for the first time. Then you either HAVE to go back to FP or some must not be that enchanted. I'm not sure why everyone doesn't go back as it can be done more cheaply the next time, especially with some of the packages I see listed. I was reading in the Tahiti News that the average French stay was over 30 days. If only!
